Next Role in Channel : Career Progression?

Hey Sales Savages,

Currently looking at a role as a Channel Account Manager, as the organization moves nearly completely through the Partner/Reseller motion. You own a territory's number, and would focus most of your energy on enabling, working with, and supporting partners/resellers as they position your products. From what I have been told, you may only have 1-2 Demos a week specifically with the end-user. However, this role does see the sales cycle to close.

My question is: How would this affect you from a career progression perspective? Could you still move internally/externally to Account Executive roles or Sales Manager roles (more end-user focused)?

No knock on Channel Sales, just know occasionally end-user focused teams/roles can have a certain opinion.

Thanks for any help here! Happy Monday!

I don't know too much about Channel Account Manager type roles, but I do know that every company is looking for AE's right now. So long term, having the AE experience on your resume would likely open up more doors

So you really get pushed into more of a management role. You are enabling an entire sales team, so a one-to-many. Your role would be closing their existing customers and helping them find new ones. The deals that close are yours, so you have closed from your company's perspective and should be treated as such.

Management is more the direction that I would want to go long term, rather than IC roles. Do you think I would be able to capture an Inside Sales Manager role from this CAM role (down the line)?

Sure, it's all how you position it - "I managed my partner's sales teams: from setting targets, doing quarterly reviews, training, and followthrough to close deals."

Depends what you are moving from now into that role. I wouldn't think it would negatively impact your ability to expand to other roles in the future.

Are you being offered other AE roles that you are comparing to this one?

Currently a Senior BDR externally, same industry. These CAMs are the account managers - even in the field, as they own the number for the territory since the organization moves almost exclusively through the partner model.
I am interviewing for other AE roles, if I do not get them, this CAM role is still a better opportunity to currently available at my current org. However, I would like to one day move to management for end-user facing teams and would wonder if this would impact my ability to get those jobs.

I don't know enough about a CAM role to say either way. It's above SDR correct?

It would stunt your growth in a closer role perspective. If you goal is to stay an IC then DO NOT go into that sales motion
