Opinions are like.... well you know how it goes..... Anyways, whats yours?

I've been leading a BDR team for a few months during a time we've not had a manager. I'm sending weekly reports, running team meetings, team (of 10) assisted in just under 1MM in closed ACV last quarter with 90% of the team hitting 100% of other input metrics. I've been overseeing all of this while still managing to remain the top performer.

Unfortunately, I have to follow a very specific 2-3 year career path within the org before leadership would ever consider promoting me to a manager... but until they hire someone, I'm still in the position to keep "practicing" for the future.

So help me out... In your opinion, what qualities do the best managers possess?

My opinion is that it's fucking BS that you're performing all of the duties of a manager without any extra compensation (unless I'm incorrect in this assumption.) It's also fucking BS that you've proven you have the ability to manage but due to "procedure" they won't be considering you for a management position for YEARS. Your current company is rolling out the red carpet for you to walk away to another company that will acknowledge your abilities.

You are correct, not getting compensated for this. I'm annoyed by it as well, and may end up looking into other opportunities... I'm just trying to take advantage of the experience right now I guess.

Don't sell yourself short - extra work is worth extra money.

It sounds like you're doing the right things so far - managing a team while still making your own quota is no easy feat.

I think the following qualities are important for a BDR manager to succeed:

- Hands on experience and demonstrated success as a BDR

- Actual desire to want to coach and train reps.  Seems obvious but some people get into management because they feel like it's the next logical step in their career, not because they want to.

- Approachable and friendly personality, but not someone that tries to be buddies with everyone on their team. Not afraid of having tough conversations.

Good for you for stepping up.   You deserve extra money for the extra work, particularly if they're not even going to consider you for management for a long time.  They should be able to come up with a bump in pay - as of right now, they have that manager's salary they are not paying.

Empathy. Knowing the product your team is selling. Availability.

IMO, the best managers shield their team from the shit that rolls downhill. You know that stupid meme with the statue that's absorbing hundreds of enemy arrows while protecting the little people on the other side? That's what a great manager does.

Oh boy
Are you assuming management would never promote you? Have you asked?

My team just went through something similar. And the one guy who stepped up and got the big title.
