Over Hiring Sh*t Bags

To the shitbag middle manager sycophants in tech companies who get promoted for nothing more than time and grade:

๐Ÿ›‘STOP HIRING PEOPLE TO PAD YOUR RESUME๐Ÿ›‘

A huge chunk of layoffs in tech right now are being dulled out by shitbird novice managers who hired to inflate their ego and exaggerate their responsibilities. ย Not only do you put a target ๐ŸŽฏ on these employees backs, but your lack of fiscal discipline creates an army of bumbling staff with no real job.

I am SURROUNDED by people with fake jobs; people who if you truly pressed them would fail to come up with a single ounce of justification of their role's existence. ย AND then these people wit bullshit jobs waste everyone's time, create communication silos, and generate an undercurrent or chaos for sales teams.

If you're one of these managerial personas OR the filler of needless roles... buckle up. ย P&L is coming home to roost. ๐Ÿ”

Tons of fake money in the SaaS world because VC was able to get money cheap for so long. Now that cheap money has dried up, I expect a lot of defaulted loans. Layoffs Luke we saw today at Salesforce will likely become pretty common, sadly.

Do what you can to stand out!

Iโ€™m not talking just VC funded SaaS. Big Tech too. Apple. Microsoft. AWS. Companies that print money and management just went on a shopping spree.

Headcount isnโ€™t typically determined by frontline managers

It's often math.

X amount of revenue divided by quota required to meet that revenue = numbers of reps needed to manage and land that quota. Pie in the sky dreaming about continued (unsustainable) growth.

Disagree - the input for headcount comes from frontline.

Frontline may provide input but ultimate decision is not based on frontline managers who want to inflate their ego and exaggerate responsibilities. Finance has to get involved to determine whether salary and comp package are available, can IT support another head, etc. Final approval def above a frontline managers head in my experience.

Suppose it depends on size of the org though. We might be differing there.

Youโ€™re speaking rhetorically. There is a difference between who cuts the check and who influences the decision. IT makes software choices but they still get their check from somewhere elseโ€ฆ.

Youโ€™re conflating purse string holder with originator of the request for funds.

Yeah I think cheap money and bad governance will make this happen. Also as long as the cost of people < profit they create there would not be a lot of pushback when hiring sales.

Ah, this is the story of every 2nd company unfortunately. Overhired. Underperformed. No real skill, just boast boast boast.
Almost every leadership that I have come across, is this way. Too bloated to see the reality.

I feel ya on this one. Companies large and small are notorious for trying to hire out of problems. Generally, problems are never fixed and expenses go up. When times are good the added expense is overlooked but when times turn to where they are now, all of the sudden they cut all the people they just hired due to "unforeseen economic circumstances".

Not having personal experience in a formal leadership position, I ask the followingโ€ฆ

How much pressure to middle managers get to hire when given budget to do so?

If they have confidence in their current team, do they have the power to divy that out in raises to retain instead of add headcount?

I wonder if many fresh managers hire just because they were told to

Elon took over Twitter, asked what people do and they couldnโ€™t give an answer. Case and point like him or not he was right. I think what we are seeing right now is companies playing copycat and being timid about the future which is fine, but I beg that we all have long memories on this.
