Paid on bookings or invoicing?

I've recently learned that many of my peers (even those that sell services) are paid on bookings, not invoicing.

My boss quit recently and walked away from 100k that he worked his ass off for because of our commission structure. We aren't paid until we invoice a project, which many times isn't invoiced until the project is complete. I'm curious if this is common for tech sales (specifically cybersecurity).

How are you paid? I’m guessing it depends on what you sell (i.e. SaaS vs consulting)

It really shouldn't be on the rep to chase down payment, they've agreed to pay, they've given you documentation to invoice them - whatever happens after that is a finance/purchasing/legal convo.

Same boat. I’m feeling much better after seeing some of these comments and poll results. Thought I may be on an island.

No, you're not. There is an upside - reduces the risk of clawbacks. If you're only paid when the money is in hand, it's unlikely you're going to give any of it back.

I had a client go bankrupt while on service once. They actually paid us, went through bankruptcy and bought the service again the next year after sorting through their issues lol we made them prepay though.

The funny thing is I think this is a similar situation but they got reabsorbed into the parent company (who wont pay us) so as much as they loved it the right people for us are gone now

Understandable if a client ends up stiffing the org

Holy cow, 1% of rev share as a BDR would be sick. That was more than my first comp package as an AM when I first moved up lol

it was a startup, deal cycle was at least 12 months, and nobody hit quota, there wasn't the best market fit in America. so no deal of theirs ever closed. Comp plans can be good on paper, but if no one hits any of the targets it doesn't matter.
