Promotion Good, Manager Bad

Just got news we got put on target for promotion today after 3 months. v good news...thought it would take more time but we were crushing it.

Situation is that after being an SDR, AEs and the rest of the sales team are divided into two sections run by two managers, one being our CRO and the other our SVP. Both are excellent sales people but operate in v different styles - the CRO is much more hands off, reserved and often is not in the office while the SVP is always in the office and is super bubbly/friendly and gives a lot of coaching. Mentioned to my mentor who is on the SVPs team that I wanted to be there as well, but ofc never lucky and I got put on the CROs team.

My concern is that not only do I think I would mesh better with the SVP, but a lot of salespeople on the CROs team aren't doing so well bc they aren't being coached or trained properly. Not sure if I got hand selected or if it was up to random chance - what to do?

You can still reach out to the SVP for help, just because they aren't your direct report doesn't eliminate them from helping you. Their success is still determined by the entire sales team's success so they will likely be more than happy to spend time helping you as well.

You won't be limited to only seeking advice/coaching from your supervisor.

I'd be honest with your CRO about what helps you succeed. "Hey, I work best when I get consistent feedback and coaching. Is it possible for us to setup a 30min 1 on 1 each week?" Something like that. A lot of times leaders are hands off because they think that's what their team prefers (and some do).

This sounds really good. I think he would probably be down for that. Heโ€™s a great salesman too and not a bad coach just never gives advice. TY

Any reason why you donโ€™t want to give it a chance ?

Iโ€™m fine with giving it a chance, just know that I wonโ€™t receive the coaching that is required to do the job. This is coming from seeing how well the new AEs are doing on the CROs team.

Does the SVP know about the struggles of the team members on the CRO's team?

This sounds like a leadership/culture issue...

Manage up - play the CROs game for a few weeks, once you start having success you can coach the coach on how to coach you. Set boundaries early, the CROs best interest is to let you thrive how you can - not micro manage you into oblivion. A good manager will see this, network with the new team and ask how others manage up to see what works and what doesn't

Worst case scenario, take the promotion.

If things don't work out you can start interviewing for roles with your new title.

Congrats, would recommend to pass on this feedback to your manager's manager and see his/her inputs,or let it be passed via your mentor instead to avoid any embarrassment if you consider any here.
Hopefully at a later day you would be able to make the shift!
