Promotion with no base pay increase

Increased OTE but base pay stayed the same after being promoted from an SDR to an AE. Is this normal??

Nope. Sounds like the only change was more responsibilities. Tell them you want a pay bump. If they say no, get out.

My (former) company offered me the same, I jumped ship. IMHO it’s how they keep internal promotions cheap w/o actually paying more. Title bump without pay bump is basically taking a pay cut, esp if you’re gonna be working more

This is a CLASSIC move.  Seen this game 100x, maybe more.

It sucks, but think of the SouthPark Episode where Cartman makes the other dude eat his parents.

You just made it out of prison and are free until your life requires more than $150k/base.

If you fight here, you will gain no leverage at your current role.  In fact, the new Enterprise Team will probably label you negative and arrogant if you ask for that extra $5/hr ($10k bump).  Not worth it, yet.

Here's what you have to do, I've seen it a million times played like this...

Take the promotion then go look for a new job after 6 months of the promotion.

You probably have the worst territory in the company anyways.  Some shitty empty patch with no inbound traffic.  Marketing probably stopped running ads to your customers too.

The other boomers you'll work for will love this.

They love to hire the SDR who was just promoted from across the town.

Behind the scenes, you'll hear... "can they prospect?  yeah, they were just promoted from an SDR!

Boom, you just doubled up on the Blackjack table.

This is how you sneak past the goalie and get that new Enterprise Job making the $150k/150k OTE.

If you can get 6-9 months doing that role then move to the next company.  You will be rewarded a nice drawer (3 months/25% of the variable) and move on.  When you leave a job, your pipeline is ALWAYS full.  Remember that.  No matter what.

Then you can almost guarantee you will be at every company for the rest of your life for 1 year.

Make sure you tell your loved ones, you don't intend to stay long.  Because once you clear the pipeline, you want to find the next one.

Maybe you even go back to the place that promoted you.

This is the move unless you work at AWS, Microsoft and they pay you on a consumption model where you get paid more variable guaranteed.

You played yourself. I would try to renegotiate or stick it out long enough to jump ship for a better offer.

Thankfully, the offer hasn't been signed yet.

You're in luck then. The problem is they have you by the balls because chances are slim that you'll get a new job as an AE without that title under your belt already. Counter them, worst case stick it out for a year and move to a new company.

AE's base is generally a good bit more than a SDR for a reason!

Hell no! Did you ask about the base increase in the promotion discussion? I kept on about it when I went to an AE

Big yikes, no way! Get that coin, what's the point of being promoted if you're not moving up a money ladder as well as a career one?

Nope. More responsibilities means more money. I look at it as my base is what my value is worth to the company and commission is what i recieve by proving i am more valuable. So if they arent giving you more money for more responsilities than they are telling you you’re not worth anymore than what you wete before.

Yeah that ain’t it champ - a promotion ain’t a promotion if the salary stays the same, that’s just bs. Talk to them about a potential bump, give them a range, and go from there my friend.

Company I started with used to call this "draft and develop" but in reality it was a just a way to hire kids straight out of college who didn't know better about anything salary related and give them extremely small raises as they moved up.

Now that you have the AE title it'll be way easier to find other jobs at new companies who will pay you market value

No. But .... your title has some weight. If you go from i.e AE to Sr AE, a company might pay you X amount more ... look around

Joe Deertay once said something about kissing your sister that seems quite similar to getting a promotion with out any increase in pay.

That's a weird one. Haven't seen that before. You should be making way more as an AE compared to being an SDR
