Question about Account Ownership

Hey Savages,

Would like to know how y'all would handle this...

I was prospecting into an HUGE account for many many months. Got through to them, intros, multiple conversations, etc.

I got a contract out to them towards the end of last year, and they didn't want to move forward at that time. I closed the opp, and put the account on a nurture campaign to follow up at the end of Q1. I forgot to engage with them ~30 days after the reengagement date I set, and another AE put the account in their name. I followed up about 45 days after the engagement date without even checking our CRM. I then realized after I sent the email to my point of contact that it wasn't in my name any longer, and I flagged my manager about it. He chose (forgot?) to do anything about it. This AE (not on his team) has sent 6-7 emails to the account (with 1 reply saying not interested), and they just inbounded with an SDR (August 5th)

My manager says he's looking into it (Obv he wants the account too cause it's his quota number too)- but I'm curious if you were leadership and/or in my position, how would you handle it? This AE hasn't done much...should they get the account? Or, should I, the one who put the time and effort along with getting a contract out to them get it?

As your manager I would be fighting to the death to yank this shit back from the AE and make sure the manager responsible for said AE gets involved. Then I'd advocate for processes to be changed or rules added to who can and cannot transfer accounts in the CRM.

Oh I am definitely pushing for changes to the process/rules after this one...I saw it coming months ago. There are snakes in the grass on our team - honestly I won't be surprised if I don't get this account.

Do you have a free for all policy after 30 days where anyone can claim the account? If not then go approach that AE and ask what his/her fucking problem is.

This works too.

It is as soon as the reengagement date passes technically anyone can go after them. I am convinced this AE has a report that shows when other AE's reengagement dates pass...this isn't the first time this shit has happened with them

I'd approach them and tell them to back off or fuck off. If they don't listen and are intent, then negotiate. Otherwise, you can be shady and go around their back, email the customer and schedule a call and persuade them to vouch they only want to work with you...

Otherwise this might require a parking lot fist fight with said AE

Like I would maybe understand if it had been a year with no contact or attempts, but for them to swoop in on a large account to try to start prospecting them... like WTF?
Do they really have no one else to prospect?

Gonna go against the grain here and say you are SOL if the other rep followed the rules of engagement. If the account was that important to you, you would have stayed within the activity dates to protect it. Dick move? Sort of. Allowed? Maybe yes and then you are at the other reps mercy if they want to give it back or not.

I'm blessed to work at a company where we have an honor system in place and give leads back. (Unassigned after 120 days)

However, if Tony ever tries to steal one of my leads - I WILL END HIM.

**Update** - Account is being split 50/50. I did 90% of the work, but 50% is better than 0%. I mentioned this is a chance for us to all sit down and review our policies. Not just management, but AE's and management. I wish there wasn't zoom (or maybe I do), because I'd be burning a laser with my eyes at the other AE in this meeting.

Dafuq? Did the other AE close a deal?

Not yet - but I pushed for a resolution before everyone walked away from their computer yesterday. I'm not thrilled I have to split it 50/50 when I did 90%+ of the work. This is the 2nd time in as many weeks I've had to fight for my accounts and ended up having to split it 50/50 with another AE. That's 2 strikes...3 strikes and this sales org (as Kenny Powers would say) IS FUCKING OUT!

Is the standard rule of engagement for your team 30 days with no activity and the account is scoop-able?

If the dude followed ROE I would say you're SOL. What would I do personally? Contact your prospect, butter them up, make sure they assume you are their point of contact and close it as though it were a fresh account. If anyone raises hell point out that you put in all of the work from day one and the client only wanted to deal with you.
