recently promoted need help

i just got promoted to BDR team lead, i have around 8 months of experience.

this is a new office, but the company is quite big for the services we give(outsource lead generation).

i was tasked to created the bdr team, i have a very limited budged(the only people i can afford are students and recent graduates xd) , and my competitors (the marketing and bdr teams from the HQ) have more budget, and the average rep there has around 8 years of experience on the role.

any tips that can help? how screwed am i?

Sounds like its set up to fail. Dont have any experience in your position but if i were lumped there, i would probably not try forge this forward by yourself, rather bring in your manager and put it back on them and make it look like you are seeking to learn from them, ie. "what would you do in this situation?"

we are just getting started on this office, so I have pretty much free reign, cause they are handling other stuff, the bdr team is not a priority here because HQ gives the sales staff here a lot of meetings

noticed on another reply, you have a small budget to hire 3. Why not hire one high performer at the same price as 3 noobs? Likely to get a better result out of one good one than 3 inexperienced interns.

the b2b space is basically just starting here in my country, pros are not so willing to change careers as they are in the US for example.

How many people are they asking you to bring on?

2 people? 4? 6?

Can you outsource where money can be stretched further?

3 people

I'd eliminate the 3rd position, put budget into 2 positions to maximize interest and go find 2 people who will work their ass off.

that's an interesting take, I will see if they like the idea, thanks!

Yeah I’m confused on why your own HQ and marketing would be competitors?

Push back on your manager for some additional guidelines, and get some more feedback. Doesn’t sound like they know what you need either.

Seems challenging but not impossible. You’re going to have to find broke & hungry college kids and vet their work ethic/creativity heavily.

Gonna look great on a resume regardless of the outcome. Just make sure your new hires are aligned in your goals.

I’m sure the vets in management can chime in on how they screenfor new BDRs

Are your expectations the same?

HQ expecting of me? no, they are very understanding, as far as they can tell I'm doing a killer job with what I have.

If you cannot water the seeds, how would you get fruits? If budget is a constraint I will get a mix of people - I would definitely need a seasoned rep as well if I am serious about growing top line.

Congrats for the promotion at first.
Damn, that's a tough situation, recommend you to increase the training, recap and after call sessions and most importantly act on their weak points and advise how to get them do better, you'd better get an assistant just for the coaching purposes to help out listening to as many calls as possible that should help a lot with enhancing their performance Asap.
Best of luck!

Doesn't sound like an ideal set up, you are going to be taking huge risks in who you are hiring and the leash will be very short, almost non-existent. maybe see if you can save on a few headcount wise and use that money to pay a better salary to some better BDRs

Is it too late to say no?

Not telling you that you can’t do it, but without a mentor or coach then you are destined to fail. It’s a fact, not me talking shit.
