Rolling with the punches

holy shit interviewing and finding the right AE role has been a ride. One of my top choices wanted to give an offer but the open role is no longer in budget.  you might think i may have dodged a bullet but thats doubtful since theyre a well recognized top notch sales org.

anyway, now I'm debating taking a pay cut (~20k between base & variable) for another role that has very positive reviews across the board. seems WLB will be a whole lot better.  quota is significantly less than most other roles buttt its solely outbound, again pays less and feel like it's not the best path to an EAE role i hope to have in a couple years time. is 20k a big deal? is this just pride?  idk man, this shit is tough.

20k is a big deal if you are making less than 100k, not as big of a deal past that.

True thats what a friend was telling me. Plus we get reamed by taxes in my parts

oh, I agree that it still is. Just economically, it just not AS big of a deal.

Big difference between barely getting by and whether you're springing for the deluxe model vs standard. :)

Yeah, totally depends on where you're at in the tax bracket though. Once you're above $89k (at least if you're married, filing jointly) you get absolutely reamed compared to anything below (12% -> 22%).
At the end of the day though, 20k can be a big deal in a lot of ways.

Lol those are rookie numbers. In BE we tax 50% on anything over 38k. Oh and the employer also adds additional labor tax so actually its about 65%. After that we have a 21% sales tax. Your commischion is taxed 65% straight away.

Thats downright disgusting, I’m not even sure I’d stick in sales with taxes like that.. unless the return is fat as ever

Same boat. Laid off from a startup back in the fall, was making $75k base, $150k OTE, they were building a lot of new solutions so I was selling to everyone from mom and pop shops to very large organizations (think 6 and 7 figure deals). Only offer I've received so far was for an entry level SMB AE role making $50k base $80k OTE. I took it because I didn't want to be unemployed, but yeah, I'm not happy. I'm making less money, working smaller deals with small and micro-businesses only, not excited about the solution I'm selling, and there's literally no advancement here unless you want to go into management.
Looking to jump at the next opportunity I get. It's a rough market out there though, especially if you don't have at least 3-5 years of SaaS-specific experience. .

Hang in there. Look at this as a bridge between great jobs - keeping the fires burning while you get to the next good thing.

Damn friend I’m sorry to hear. Did you like the startup? With experience working 6-7 fig deals im sure you can command a solid pay/role. Best of luck

I liked it. I had a great team I worked with, great manager, and I really thought they had a good market fit for what they were trying to build. I realized too late though that the CEO was a doofus who (despite being a professional finance guy before starting the company) didn't understand you can't burn cash on R&D faster than you earn it and hope to stay afloat.

$20k is big for me. That's daycare for the year!

Keep grinding.

Are any companies on the list Corp posted worth looking at for you?

And yes, actually both companies this post references are on there.

i cant tell you if $20K is a big deal. only you can decide that.
if you are trying to get into enterprise sales, having a smaller quota will not help.

Many companies want to see you have a quota of $1MM or more.

That’s what I was thinking! While it seems like a great place where I’d have an easier life, I don’t feel right going down in comp and quota.

Is the comp at all negotiable?

Should be. Pretty confident I can get it bumped. But besides comp, tennis ^ brings up a good point that concerns me

I mean look, if it is your only option right now then it is a means to an end. I had a quota of 600k before I joined my current org where I have a 1 mil quota. A bigger indicator is if you acheive your targets or not.

Yes - a means to an end. It's something you can always use during the interview for your next job - you took this one to learn about x vertical or to work in y solution set to add to your skills, or something.
Glad to hear you think the comp is negotiable. If you can get that fixed to your satisfaction, that makes this a lot more palatable of a move.
