Rules for Texting

What is everyone's rule for texting clients? My rules are:

  • Use emojis based on the relationship I have
  • only one text to them if its a cold message, if they dont respond they dont want to talk
  • If got permission to text, never triple text
  • If I have taken them to event, I am using it constantly. I am texting them to confirm we are still on for the meeting or a quick one off question about the opportunity

I never text a prospect cold. I don't text until I have permission to use that form of communication from them.

By cold I mean, inbound lead or referral/introduced to them via email.

I never text a prospect cold. idk maybe im just old fashioned but I would HATE that if it was me.

if im in an active opportunity I always try to get to text.

I always ask them if its ok if i shoot them a text. if they have a voicemail box thats full ill shoot them a text and let them know. if they text back, were good to go.

if im meeting at an event I ALWAYS ask to text. but again, i get permission first.

Never cold text.

Ask for permission, then use sparingly for quick answers.

I closed my last 3 deals through text messaging. This was one AFTER the demo and they gave me the go-ahead. I made the mistake of cold texting a prospect I was trying to work with...we never got their business.

I do note that you are saying that the lead isn't cold (as in straight outbound) but I'm going to fall on the side of asking permission to text anyway. If they were introduced by email, follow up that way, ask if they like texting as a form of communication, and ask if you can text them from time to time. I don't tend to just text customers unless it's a key moment - has to do with meeting somewhere or telling them to check Docusign. If we do develop a relationship that is more casual, sure, I'll text more frequently, but my C-level execs aren't looking for texts from me without context.

The way I see it if they give you their cell number, especially if they mention it's a cell phone, you can text them.

Text for cold prospecting is way too invasive, never do that. Especially after sending emails and LinkedIn DMs. Plus if you do have the chance to find their cellphone numbers, call them donโ€™t text. The point of calling is youโ€™re in the moment, you have that precious minute to convince them. Sending a text is yet another lost attempt with words no different to emails or LinkedIn dm other than being really invasive

Further down the funnel like after a few calls, to me itโ€™s really a last resort. You only text if you have no news via email and the lead avoids your calls. Though sending a text feel really like a shameful/needy move at that point. Iโ€™m a founder and am on the receiving end of such sms, all the time I received these, it really felt needy

If itโ€™s about account management, itโ€™s a whole different story. It really depends on the relationship you have with your clients. Some will love it, some will hate it

Ask yourself โ€œis this weirdโ€?

If the question is yes, donโ€™t do it.

Donโ€™t overthink this one.

Think theres a software company around SMS outreach and marketing called Attentive if im not mistaken..

But never truly cold outbound text, if I have an inbound demo request though im calling them twice (if first goes to voicemail), and then just shooting a text saying

โ€œHey __ its Boston Hound from Bravado, just calling to get that demo you requested on the books. When would be a better time to call?โ€
