Sales-centric VS Product-centric

In my experience, the battle between revenue generating teams and product teams is as old as time within software companies.

Sales teams often don’t appreciate the technical complexities of adding what may seem like a simple feature, field, or button. They want to change the product roadmap to benefit their own individual pipeline as opposed to doing what makes sense for the entire org. Lastly, they’re often more concerned about what the product doesn’t do than anything else and view product teams as lazy for being resistant to change.

Product teams, on the other hand, often don’t appreciate the challenges of generating revenue and can be resistent to feedback from sales and their customers. They want extensive data proving that X feature is worth developing all while the competition is eating our lunch by including it in their solution. Lastly, they believe that every department should serve to make their lives easier and have a tendency to view their contributions as more meaningful compared to other departments.

Obviously, I’m making big generalizations here at both extremes and I expect that most of us will be biased towards preferring sales-centric organizations.

Would love to hear from savages who prefer to work in product-centric orgs and why?

My company produces a consumer centric product. It’s my job to develop the strategy that the sales team can leverage to win more accounts and revenue in the field.

Product-centric orgs need to focus more on enablement whereas sales-centric orgs need to focus more on product marketing. Both have their pros and cons, but neither wins if the strategy behind the GTM motion isn’t properly balanced.

I have to skew sales-centric solely because it makes my life easier. Having a great product makes it easier to bring prospects to the table, but sales-centric makes it easier to close imo

My org is interesting because I believe we used to be product-centric and after developing a best in space product, went sales-centric

Here’s why I voted product-centric:

I am a product owner. A product marketing manager. And a sales person.

I’m currently writing all the cadences for all of our personas, of which I also defined.

As you can probably guess, my current company is small, but profitable and growing quickly.

A sales-led sales motion is so reliant on the schedules and aptitude of the sales team. While my team is good, it’s common for a sales team to be either not efficient, not good enough, or not care enough.

A product-led sales motion lets money come in while you sleep. A user can onboard 100% without ever having to talk to a salesperson. We are actively losing deals because of not having something like this in place.

Lots of small fish make for a great platter. And right now, we can only focus on big fish due to our limitations.

We need more sales enablement, which is why I wrote the cadences, but training and best practices take so much time. I feel like I could have built an entire onboarding experience within the time it took just to get some people slightly ramped.

Great post Cadence. Super thought provoking.

This is likely unique to my market being in med device but we’re probably more a product centric org versus sales centric org.

Reason being, our product is our process in how we go about refurbishing the equipment we sell. Many in our industry will slap a coat of paint and say “hey look it’s refurbished/like new”.

In actuality, we’re stripping down these medical devices and replacing any faulty components with system tested parts that meet or exceed the spec of the manufacturer.

On the flip side, we’re never the cheapest option for customers. Our sales team is strong because we can stand on our product/quality/operations and the back end support we bring to the table.

Hopefully I’m helping with my answer!

What a great question. I am fortunate to work for a company where the CPO and CEO are visionaries and so are constantly staying in tune with the market. They both pore over win/loss reviews to see where we are missing the mark and the reason we lost . The CPO takes product gap losses personally, and the product teams work tirelessly to keep us top of market. Honestly, this is a good balance of sales/product - so I’m feeling pretty fortunate.

Solid post as always @CadenceCombat. This see-saw goes back even longer than software… for the crusty underwear club who sold broadcast media before there was even a SaaS.

Kimberly Clark would want the #1 morning radio show to give away Kleenex for the saddest story from a caller - or some such shit. They’d hold the station hostage over the $250k annual commitment.

Programming would never do it. Muh ratings!!! So, sales would have get diplomatic AF and create stupid alternative solutions. Then, after sucking up to the tissue co we’d merchandise the solution back to the program director.

See??!! I didn’t ruin your morning show! It’s always been a battle. Not sure why I like it so much

This is most evident when companies operate in silos. Often in early stage companies the teams are small and everyone is working together so there's a better middle ground.
With that said give me a product focused company and let me build a sales motion on top of what they've already built!

Read the book: "New Sales. Simplified." by Mike Weinberg.
He goes over a study on sales centric companies and how their revenue grows exponentially faster.

I believe that each company has a bit of both and that's normal as each team has a target to work on.I'm more into sales centric though for being a sales rep yet believe that my team and I appreciate the technical complexities or at least explaining them when being asked to by the customers!

At this rate, Max, your hole gets deeper with every word. Don’t you think it might be wise to give it a rest? Maybe re-engineer a strategy? They’re gonna have to suck that PS5 back through customs at your current rate.

This is, by no means, a comment on the value of the content in your posts. The downvotes that they attract makes that judgement. I’m just telling you to use some common sense.

Persistence is admirable. Belligerence is annoying.

I’m just telling you that what you’re doing is clearly not working for you. And if you want something else you gotta do something different. If you don’t, chances are you’re going to end up where you’re headed. I have blamed nobody.

Long time for good reason. I’m not here to engage, I’m here to impart advice. You can either add value to conversations, or you can add noise.
