Sales is more important than product. You are more important than you know, friends.

Justin Kan is the founder of Twitch (IE - Justin.TV).

Martin Casado is a VC at Andressen Horowitz (IE - top 3 VC firm globally), prior was the founder of a company sold yup VMWare for $1.2 Billion.

These 2 are both technical product leaders who understand the game. And both realize that every company, no matter how good the product is or is not.... every company breathes and lives and dies by sales.

The best example of this is Slack. Slack, the darling of the product led growth movement, once famously declared "We will never have salespeople here."

Fast forward a few years: Slack is desperately hiring for enterprise salespeople, has a MASSIVE SDR and AE team.

Fast forward another few years: They are forced to sell to Salesforce because they cannot compete with Microsoft's enterprise sales team, which is crushing them with Teams. Salesforce has arguably the best sales team in the world, can actually unlock the value that Slack is leaving on the table.

GTM > Product. Yes you need both. But ultimately...

GTM > Product.

I clicked unsure Iโ€™d agree with the premise. But your argument is so spot on.ย

Interesting read. Like @swerveย Iโ€™m not sure if I buy into sales being MORE important than product but I wasnโ€™t familiar with how Slack had stated they would never have salespeople. Thatโ€™s interesting. Thanks @sahilย
