Sales Titles

This day and age, it's really hard to know what people actually do in sales. It seems like companies are throwing fancy titles at their people and I'm curious, from a salesperson's perspective, if you care and truly feel it makes a difference.

I know the argument that a Regional Manager or Director type title gives this notion of credibility to your prospects over something like an Account Executive type title but I'm not so sure it does. I actually think its the opposite but would love to hear your thoughts.

As an Account Executive, it does add credibility to a call if i bring someone from the leadership team as an executive sponsor but part of that is knowing when to bring them into the conversation and being specific about how you want to leverage their participation.

Almost a different discussion @CadenceCombat but I agree with you on the value in bringing in leadership in the sales process. I do think its weird though when an AE with a Sales Director title loops in their "Sales Manager".

Haha fair. I guess I haven’t encountered too many inflated titles within sales at this point.

Interesting, in my industry a "Sales Director" holds more say than a "sales manager",

Great point; helps make the prospect valued.

Vanity titles are useless and see-through IMO. People speak with who they sound like and credibility is built by understanding their world and being able to speak to it in their lingo/ add valuable insight.

Couldn't agree more @Kanyebut4sales as what you say and bring to the table is where credibility is established. Vanity titles are more about impressing the AEs parents and grandparents than the actual prospect IMO. Seems to be increasingly popular though...

Going to play both sides here:
On one hand, I had a VP in my current company that oversaw 0 people... things like that are completely see-through IMO
That being said, as a sales rep, get the best title you can. Recruiters use keywords to source, and this can lead to you being considered for better positions.

I have several vanity titles. I have been in a CRO/Head of Growth role for startups and actually used Account Executive in my email sig because I think it looks weird that the CRO or Head of Sales would be sending cold emails, yet I do a lot of that. I have seen many open positions for VP of Sales or Regional Sales Director only to find in the description it really is an Account Executive Position.

Sales titles are super weird, I am with you. My company hired me as a "Client Engagement Manager", I was promoted to "Client Engagement Director", and just finished interviews for another potential promotion into management with the title of "Sales Manager".

Super confusing...some standardization would be very helpful.

I do not see much use ina. title, however there definitely is added responsibility. In terms of prospects, in my opinion they do not actually care if they are speaking to a manager, a director or an sdr. On our end its just added responsibility and more focus on big dollar spenders. As a director I was more involved in paper pushing and oversight and not really interacting with accounts unless they broke a certain monetary thresh hold. As a rep I was dealing with all the inbound and out bound leads. I feel the titles are more for internal orginanization.

Great question ... I've been contemplating adding Regional VP to my email signature for some time but have similar doubts
