SDR role at OpenAI

Currently interviewing for a role at OpenAI, and the job description sounds a lot like that of an SDR - managing inbound leads, qualifying etc.

I've worked in pre-sales and in account management, but never in an SDR capacity.

Any advice on what I can expect and how to prepare? Thanks!

Hey,
All the best for the interview.

They do have an interview guide on their website, you can check that out.

Also,
I’d say, talk to a lot of SDR’s before the interview. SDR is a lot different that pre-sales. Basic questions, query handling, how to qualify a prospect and the other basics.

Even though I’ve not given any interviews at OpenAI, one thing I suggest is to be quick on your toes and be creative as hell. I can only imagine a company that’s soo deep into tech might be on the look out to hire people who can sell their software differently(creatively) or else it’ll auto sell.

Super helpful, thank you!

1. Did check out the interview guide, but wasn’t super helpful nor was it recently updated

2. Agreed on the questions, query handling, qualification etc. Don’t have a whole lot of experience there, so wanted to get some advice where to learn more about that

3. Can you elaborate on the creativity? They had mentioned they would be assessing me on that, but I wasn’t exactly sure why. What you do mean by “autosell”?

Thanks for such a thoughtful response!

Creativity in sales terms means ability to solve using resources, including a thought process, focused on desired business outcomes. You have to show them that you are capable of listening, finding the problem, and solving it using your product. Then, you need to be able to deliver this solution articulately, with enthusiasm, and urgency.

Easy, right?

That’s makes sense, but isn’t that the typical playbook for anyone in sales? What makes it “creative”?

The imagination that solves and illustrates. The parts of the solution and how the path to business outcomes is illuminated. Not easy to define creativity.

One of the hottest companies in the world right now and quite possibly will become a Microsoft role (who likes to fire people, so stay frosty.)

Be humble. Be excited. Learn the buzzwords but don’t overly use them. And for kicks, you can say that you asked GPT4 how to prep for an OpenAI interview.
