Selling for a company based out of India, any experiences?

I got hit up by a company that is based out of India and they are trying to build out their market in the US. The manager I have changes between the US and India for their job. When I talked to the leaders, they say that they have a hands off approach and do not like to micromanage. However, I have read a lot of things online about Indian work culture.

I will be one of a handful of American workers selling to their US market. Can anyone share any experience of how it is like to work for a company based out of India?

This goes back to ‘16 but some probably still applies. I worked for a $7B monster. They had HR set up in NY. Used ADP. Money showed on time. Checks cleared. All normal.

The benefits were on the shit end for such a big org.
And their comp plan was conservative. Was a base as an unrecoverable draw. Commission rate was good but they didn’t pay dime one until the draw was exceeded. No quota but you could eat all you killed. Revenue expectations were reasonable.

Here’s the thing: I found them disconnected from standard business practice here. They were formal and conservative Fine. It’s a business. But they didn’t pay for things you’d expect. Like, maybe a CRM?

The prevailing sentiment/environment was decent with a good people focus.

Long way to go to tell you that you may have to ask for things you’ll expect on day 1. You might even have to fight for it. But it’s probably going to be pretty standard with an occasional need for translation of some things.

You’ll be fine.

Have you accepted the role? Did they make it seem like it would be different from other roles that are US based companies?

How comfortable are you with the likelihood that you'll need to work midnight hours to be on team calls, get support from Indian-based ops teams, etc?

I was wondering about the time difference too. Which do you adhere to?

I'd think for most things, the US market, because that's the role.

Team meetings would be interesting, however, if they don't have a different way to handle the North America teams.

Most of the companies from India have offices in the US. In your case, the company wants to penetrate into the US market. Do your research about the company and people. As they clearly mention they don't want to micromanage this tells about their culture. They need results hence give it a shot if you feel everything okay with them.

It really depends on where the support is coming from - pre-sales, delivery, post-sales, etc. If its ALL from India, I would be wary. If they have US-based assets, especially on the pre-sales and delivery sides - ok.

Just be ready for the heavy accents.

I believe it won't make that massive difference, as it would only just take a bit of time to adapt to the role, only if you accepted it,didn't you or not yet!!
