Selling into the Northeast

Hey Sales Savages,

Have never really covered my soon-to-be territory of NY and NJ. Is the Northeast stereotypes for real when selling into NY? (I.E. Pique curiosity asap, difficult to cold call into etc.) Any advice of how to be most effective communicating and delivering value in this territory? Would also be curious to hear what your experiences have been like with this territory.

The biggest difference I have noticed is you get No's a lot quicker, which is a good thing for not getting ghosted and chasing lost opportunities.

The responses are enlightening. Much different than the south.

speaking from the south here. no one ever wants to be rude so they give a bunch of general feedback that makes you feel good. in the north you get more direct and actionable feedback.

You’re gonna want to be more direct and match their style a bit. Like kosta said, it’ll save you time cuz you’ll get quicker no’s.

Typically buyers come across as more rude, sometimes that is because they are actually rude, but most of the time it is just the way they speak. Don't worry if everyone seems to hate you when you talk to them

you know very quickly where you stand. Some people don't appreciate the bluntness but I find it always kind of refreshing and helps me be more direct and cut through the BS.

I prefer it over the south. Makes forecasting easier.

Get to the point, be up front. Be prepared to hear "I'm going to be blunt/put it straight/be upfront" a lot. They tend to be very direct and prefer to communicate that way as well.

I’m a New Yorker. We’re all just very direct, don’t beat around the bush much. You’ll get quick nos and typically straight forward answers. Not always the case but more so than other regions imo.

I used to sell to New England exclusively in my last SDR job. When working with new prospects, always keep their best interests on the tip of your tongue and say them often.

They're not much different from the rest of the country when you get down to it. The communication patterns are just more direct.

This is my wheelhouse brother. Yes, all true!!!! Be truthful, listen, ask questions, and have a sense of urgency always!!!!! The upside of selling in the NE is if you manage your calls properly, the sales cycle regardless of vertical can and will be much faster!!!!

TBH, from my experience of having worked the northeast versus other territories, in most cases you won't be hurting for business!

NYC is tough.

But people tend to move faster around there. Willing to try new things, and also willing to say no
