Selling into the USA

I saw a post the other day about the differences between how people react to a cold call in Europe compared to the USA & it got me thinking.

I have sold into the USA a couple of times but not enough to know the market. However, I have heard that across the pond (i'm in the UK) it's a 'Buy quick, exit fast' type situation. (sometimes) an early adopter attitude you could say.

My company hasn't focused on America much but for some reason we do get a lot of attention. Seeing as the majority of Bravado is in America, do any of you have generalised tips or even personal tips for how to not just approach a cold call or email etc, but more so any advice that is specifically how Americans sell compared to UK/ Europe?

Are there things that shouldn't be said and things that should 100% be said? Is price the main factor? Do you prefer a straight-up hard sell or a general chit chat first?

I'm trying to convince my company to focus regular days and hours to look into America so any advice and help would be appreciated!

This really depends on part of the country, industry, and title. We give significantly less of a shit about data privacy than Europe I can tell you that much.

All you get for a hack here is a hand slap and a fine that can be written off.

Just approach the call same way you would any other call.

So due to time zones, I would generally go for the east coast and maybe the...is it mountain state time?

I find every cold call i do to an American company you can speak to the right person (depending on the size of the company) but when they hear the British voice it's 50/50. They are either really monosyllabic and don't care or they are super interested!

Bro that’s literally how they are anyway, doesn’t matter where you are from. We are all assholes. The best cold caller I have ever met in my life had the thickest Filipino accent you’ve ever heard that would come out sometimes on calls, and he sold to the Deep South lol. Dude fucking crushed it and I learned a ton from him. Don’t let the accent hold you back!

Sound, I love this example. Cheers man! Out of interest, have you sold into the UK? If so, have you found an Accent negatively effects you here?

Yes and no, never to a UK based company (that falls to our UK team for obvious reasons), but I have had DMs or champions who live in the UK or other parts of Europe. Nah, accents never affected me unless I or they genuinely couldn’t understand.

Privacy is a thing of the past for many in the US.

Well, I've noticed people in Europe are much more ''open'' to discuss our products/services than in the US. Can't tell you how many times I've heard ''who gave you my phone'' and ''please, delete my number right away.''

So do you reckon it's a culture thing in the sense of America has SO many sales people contacting everyone (in terms of population) whilst Europe is less and it's not as frequent? That probably makes no sense haha!

Haha that's a good question, I receive at least 10 calls a day from salespeople, it drives me crazy and it's kinda ironic when you think about it lol.

Random sales person "hey, we haven't spoken before, but can I have 2.."

Bam: "27 seconds of my time? Yeah, I use that one too, who gave you my number?" 👀

I've sold into the UK, Canada and the US. Imo, the US is about brevity, less chit chat, more "what can you do for me". It's not to say small talk here and there and an ice breaker don't help, but I noticed in the UK and some parts of Canada, it's kinda implied you'd ask how their weekend was, do anything fun, how the family is. I may be off base here, but just based off my experience and pov.

Thanks for this. You aren't off base at all. All my meetings start with - 'Where are you based and how's the weather there'. classic brits. When you sell into the UK definitely just talk about the weather and for some reason we all find it very amusing haha

Yeah, Ive had very few calls where it hasn't been straight business in the US. Calling into Canada is nice cuz it's the only place my cold call is greeted with a "how are you?" vs in the US with "how did you get number, mofo?. So yeah, some tongue in cheek humor has helped in the US for me, but generally speaking, it's all business and the value prop.
