Should I stay or go?

Hi everyone! I want to start looking at closing roles at other companies since I've been an SDR for over a year.

I don't think I have any upward mobility at my current company since we just went through a RIF and our revenue org was impacted the most. Plus, the company has made questionable promotion decisions before (i.e promoting someone who never hit quota to an AE role).

I've started talking to recruiters and there is a chance I could get into a closing role BUT I'm terrified I'll accept a job offer and have it rescinded or the company goes through a RIF and I'm impacted. What do you think: do I stay or go?

Layoffs can happen anywhere. Don't let that stop you from making a move somewhere else. Just make sure to be more picky when making a jump than you would in a normal economy. Stick with someone who is top of their market, isn't in the series A/B stage, already has strong market share, and has the marketing/name recognition to keep going strong in a recession.

@NotCreativeEnough Will do. Have you heard anything about DataGrail? They’re series B but I think their product is doing really well.

The answer to this question is almost always go. If you're asking, it's because you want to leave. If you want to leave, regardless of the reason, you need to. It sucks staying at a company you don't want to be at.

Bootstrapped companies usually do well during recessions because they don't have to justify anything to any investors. These companies are usually laying off because they received some money from investors, hired like crazy, and now they have to tighten their belts and show investors how they're going to stretch that money. The answer usually is layoffs.

If you have no upward mobility and want to close, then why stay!?

The fact that you're asking this question says volumes.

@jefe Says volumes about what? I know it should be a no brainer but I just worry about layoffs

Whats a RIF? Find a company solid enough not to rescind an offer and don't quit until you have your first day completed or first paycheck in.

@SADNESSLieutenant RIF = reduction in force. I want a break though before I start a new job though.

There are loads of orgs looking for sdrs with experience. Do some research into the company and don't be afraid to ask the tough questions in interviews. That'll help you sort out the solid options from the time wasters

Have you actually asked about being promoted to AE where you are at or have you just expected to be promoted due to tenure or just putting in the time?

@antiASKHOLE I have discussed it before and was told I was next in line but never got promoted. I’m the only rep who hits and exceeds quota and activity metrics.

dude GO!

Those things are 100% out of your control.

Do what you CAN control, which is get into an org that will get you closing experience.

then start closing! once you do that SO many more opportunities will be there for you.

It is better to have a story of taking a shot on yourself getting a closing role than being impacted by the new org than staying at a company with no upward mobility.

Prove that you can get a closing role and if a layoff happens, you can still sell yourself to other closing roles.
