This ain't it

I got laid off from a pretty good company. Quickly, I landed interviews and had multiple offers. Now, I'm at the company I chose and absolutely loathe it. It's gotten to where I can't sleep at night because all I can do is think about how much I hate it here.

It is a paycheck, however much smaller than what I'm used to, but I felt it was wise at the time to be employed and if I didn't like it, I could look for something else.

For the sake of my mental health, I feel like it would be better to quit this job even before finding a new one. Would that be career suicide? Is it true that companies only want to talk to you if you already have a job? Has this happened to anyone else?

Normally I'd say stick it out until you find something new, but if it's impacting you this much then you have to take care of yourself.

Also you can just refuse to provide a current employer reference when getting the new job and exaggerate your tenure a little bit

I've never heard of a company insisting on current company reference. It might be listed out in something, but with pushback it should go away.

There is no possible outcome, as a result of you leaving that job, that makes staying sustainable for you. When the gig costs you sleep, it's time to exit. Sales is challenging in enough ways. You must go. Go!

You'll be just fine

Sorry to hear. What's making you hate it so much? Maybe you could quiet quit and just go on walks, long lunches, do other things while you're looking for better things?

Hey Pirate - that's good advice. One of my main complaints is the micromanagement. When I interviewed, I asked my to be manager at the time what her management style was and she specifically said that she wouldn't think of me as her manager but more as a partner and was hiring me based on my sales leadership. That, however, has not been the case and she wants my every move shadowed and has a daily team call. So, it's kinda hard to hide. But that's probably what I should do - quiet quit.

Okay so in terms of micromanagement - can you involve her more in everything? Run everything by her, have her in every meeting, every email... eventually that will wear her out? Can you go for a lunch or coffee with this person? I think you should focus on your mental health so find things throughout the day that you look forward to. Like nice lunch, a walk, a bit of gaming etc.

It’d probably be best to try and find something else before quitting. As @Pirate said, quiet quitting will probably give you some peace of mind.

Oh, that's rough. It's one thing when things at a company change over time, but another entirely when they are not as represented at the jump.
You have to do what's best for you. While it's possible a lot of this is discomfort - change can be hard - if you're really out of sorts, you definitely need to find something else, and honestly, if you're losing sleep, it's not healthy.
How long have you been there?

I think the big question is can you afford to quit this job if it takes a long time for you to find something else? And do you have a family depending on this income?

I toughed out some really horrible people while looking just because I couldn’t afford to quit. It’s hard, but for me the mental toll of not providing for my family is harder

No job is worth a mental health breakdown.

I would say, if you can afford it, then leave!

But be careful. No money (truly), is more stressful than shitty job with money stress

Find a new one, keep this as a placeholder while you land one so your bank account does not dry.

Do whats best for you. If you do quit before inking a new gig. DEF say your still employed as it raises flags if you say you left

I would usually say protect the paycheck, however, if you have a nice nest egg for 3-4 months, the mental benefit is better, you could also do gig work in the mean time as well

I’m in the same situation of getting the life sucked out of me every day. The struggle I have to get out of bed during the week is getting harder to beat. I’m a zombie on weekends. My new year resolution is to quiet quit while looking for something less shitty. It’s going to be really hard because I have this bullshit “give it your all even if you are dying” work ethic. We might as well be getting paid to interview.

Same situation. Was laid off in July, took another job to make ends meet and now it haunts my dreams.

Only saving grace is it is 100% remote so when I’m not blazing through tasks or on remedial internal meetings, I’m actively searching for a new role.

Life is too short to be at sh!t jobs and there is a world of possibilities out there.
