"Thought Leadership"

In almost every role I've worked, my management has stressed creating LinkedIn content in order to become a "Thought Leader"

Any of the content being put out by my colleagues (hell, even myself) has always felt hollow, without driving home any real value. The posts just come across as advertisements with extra steps.

Has this tactic yielded any results for you if you've engaged with it? Do you think this type of content has lead to the abysmal current state of LinkedIn?

Are "thought leadership" posts worth your time?

This right here is where "influencers" are born.

For some people, thought leadership comes naturally. For most people, it's forced, awkward, and provides no value. There's a subset of people who have interesting things to share, and just need a little practice or polish to make it work.

Having a company believe that you're all in the first category or even the third is contributing to a large part of the noise and nonsense out there on the interwebs.

I feel like making video content is a great way to get a leg up in the "influencer" scene. I just don't have the time/interest/patience to do that.

I literally have better things to do. And so much content is just garbage.

Really depends how much time you are spending on posting these and if you are connected with prospects.

Never really hurts to post content on your products/what new problem you are solving even if its more advertising as long as your prospects can see it.

Definitely was reaching more of my target audience in previous roles. Current industry has next to no presence on LinkedIn, but our management still wants us to flex that muscle a bit.

Thats the issue sometimes, a Director will see an influecer talk about the need to post on LinkedIn for all reps, but if all your prospects dont have one. Whats the point?

if you are not an expert in the industry you are not going to be a though leader.

I sell into the life science's space, i never once worked at a pharma company or a clinical trial site, so i will NEVER be a thought leader to those people.

But what I can do is talk about the problems the product solves in a way that is real and not just marketing. so i wont be a thought leader, but Ill be a source of information for a very specific thing.

that is also valuable.

IMO, 'thought leadership' content is only worthwhile to read if you provide concrete steps or advice. 99% of thought leadership is stuff along the lines of "Modern companies must leverage AI to get ahead". No shit, Sherlock.

The best content instead says things like "AI is just a tool; here are 3 specific things you need to think about first. One, define who and how much money you are willing to invest...etc.". In essence, create content that actually helps people get started, not just a headline phrase that everyone can nod at and agree with but that does nothing else beyond that.

Those are definitely the ones I think that are worthwhile (usually). Often times it's tied into how you can achieve those three things using your solution. I find it more valuable when those posts don't have a tie in with a solution, but actionable things that you can do independent of writing a check for a product/service.
