Thoughts on using automation tools for VP/C-Suite outreach?

I've always had the philosophy that VP/C-level contacts are best left alone unless you're approaching them with a qualified conversation. However lately our SDR's have been booking meetings with automated messaging and I'm not sure if I'm missing out or if we're scorching our reputation to pick up a few lucky meetings. What do y'all think?

Just because it’s automated doesn’t mean you can’t personalize a few messages

That’s true. From the meetings I’ve seen come through those these have been pure automation plays which surprises me.

My personal views on reaching out to high level contacts is as customized as possible with details relevant to specific person at specific company and as to the point as possible.

That’s how I’ve always felt and had high conversion rates on those contacts, but now I’m starting to wonder if those execs would have converted anyway 🤔

Throw a big net and you'll always end up with fish that need to be thrown back. Bait a large hook and the only ones you'll catch are large fish.

That’s a good point. Maybe I’m an anomaly or handling them wrong but the meetings I’ve had that booked off automation have been pretty weak.

Nailed it! I know you are selling, I still want you to look like you care beyond the purchase order.

I think it’s a terrible idea but I’m usually wrong about this stuff.

That would piss me off as a C-Level. If you're contacting me it better be personal for me and show value or I'm out and you're blocked.

Are you personalizing some/all of the messages or just using straight automation?

All personalized dynamic insertion paired with a ringless voicemail. Put it on a workflow and then let it run.

I've definitely seen some success with it. I mean ideally you'd want more personalization but it can get time consuming really fast. I think there's a middle ground though. You can have small elements of personalization while still using automation.

I think there was something circulating about how only 20% of the message needs to be personalized to be effective or something like that. Do you have any go-to elements for personalization? I definitely spend way too much time on bespoke emails.

Interesting... would love to see the link if you've got it. So I sell to eCommerce merchants. Some personalization variables I use are: Name, Company Name, eCommerce platform, and if they are using a competitor we have separate sequences. This is integral for email deliverability. If you send a ton of emails without personalization there's a chance it will mess with your email integrity.

My little spin is if it's an industry I'm into or a product that looks really cool, I'll throw in a compliment somewhere in there or ask a product question as if I'm looking to buy.

That’s what I’m worried about. Especially when I see automated messages going to execs in companies I’m building up a case in.

All depends on how tailored the message is. If it feels like spam, then it probably is.

Good way to gauge it! I think back to some of my early emails and cringe at the thought that they still exist on a mail server somewhere.

All depends on what you’re selling; if it’s a fairly common issue across the industry and something that is pretty standard that your company is the gold standard of dealing with: automation works If you’re not a well known company, competing in a very complex space, with a complex and very sophisticated product, less automation and more personalization

As a c-suite, I can tell you it won't make to me. My EA will have automated messages pulled from my inbox long before I get to see them.

Personal unsolicited mail on the other hand will get through where it is addressed to me and shows familiarity.

If you want 30 minutes to pitch - show me you at least bothered to learn about my business and engage with familiarity to my industry/business/me.
