Took a Mental Health Day - Lol JK!!

I’m headed down to California tomorrow for a softball tournament, but as I’ve been pretty burnt out recently, I took today off as well. I told myself that I’d just chill out and do some low energy activities to relax that I don’t usually get the chance to do.

I didn’t set my alarm and hoped to sleep in - I woke up 6am. So I was like, “okay, well let’s just have a productive morning since we’re already up, and then we’ll chill.” So I did some laundry, cleaned my place (both overdue), and paid my bills. I killed a few hours, and as a few of you know, I’m a big Germany/Bayern Munich soccer fan so I sat down to watch the Germany game, cracked a brunch Coors, and turned my phone off to avoid distractions and let myself enjoy. Heard a call come through from my iPad (courtesy of Bravado, thank you @sahil, @GeneralCorp) and of course, it was an important work call that I had to take.

Since then, I have been been scrambling, making phone calls, and responding to emails that I really didn’t want (or thought) I’d to have to deal with, and now I feel obliged to work and finish all these tasks.

I guess I really don’t know what the point of this post is, rather than to vent that even on my planned 0 work day, I still can’t disconnect, and now I’m working while on PTO. Pretty bummed. I’d ask for advice on how others are able to disconnect, but we’re already past the point of no return and I know that if I would’ve also remembered to turn off my iPad, I would’ve been set.

On a more positive note, I have not stopped cracking the Coors while I’ve been working, as a Coors Knight should be able to do both simultaneously. S/O@BigMeech

I'd be calling in for another PTO day since you weren't able to take advantage of it today. You don't work for free my dude.

Thought about this, not a bad idea but I’m also grinding towards a promotion and don’t know how my boss would take it - don’t want to sound ungrateful or entitled. Might just ask to have like 4-5 hours added to the PTO bank and use them before EOY.

Fuck that. Tell them what happened. If you’re on budgeted PTO all the more reason to do it. If they’re smart, they’ll tell you to take a half day.

Whenever this happened to my team I’d tell them to bang out early.

THE COORS KNIGHTS ALWAYS DO BOTH. THE MOUNTAINS ARE ALWAYS BLUE.

But we also prioritize mental health and time with friends/family… take those PTO days seriously man. Burnout is real, and a quick way to get there is to have trouble disconnecting.

I would talk to your manager about it, and find someone you trust who can step in. When I go on PTO I turn off my work phone and put a teammate in my OOO who I know will cover.

Hit some fucking dingers!

DINGERS TO THE MOON. I’d expect nothing less than that from a Coors Knight. I believe in you @BigCheese get that PTO back. Take it for real next time and take care of yourself. Burnout is real, the business will always be there when you get back.

Do you have a back up that can handle stuff for a day? Putting a clear OOO message and a note in your signature with any upcoming OOO can help, in my experience.

You have earned the time off. Be sure to carve it out!

Yeah I do, and they did quite a bit for me which I’m grateful for, but there’s just so much info on the requisitions I’m working on and the candidates that I’m working with that I’m really the only one with the inside knowledge to get things taken care of by their deadlines. So if I’m not the one actively working on these things, then I’m still investing time to consult and provide insight.

Not sure where in California you're headed but we welcome you with open arms, endless wine, and a fat joint to help you disconnect. You just might want to throw your phone in the ocean while you're here also and let those relaxing California rays reset your burned out soul. 😘

Also good luck in your tournament!!!!

Haha thank you. Actually headed to the most desirable of destinations in all of California…

Modesto!

Lmao I’ll hold you to it though if you’re around that armpit of a city as I’m out with a broken wrist (beer die) and won’t be able to play :——)

Biggest thing I struggle with as well, I have tried shutting everything off previously but found I was more stressed with not knowing what is going on and couldn’t enjoy my time off. I have found it has helped with a check in midday with whoever is handling my stuff during the day or week that I am off with a text, email or call to see if anything is a stage 5 emergency and if there is I get it done and move on. If no emergencies, then it puts my mind at ease for the rest of that day. I know this is basically useless for this situation but hope it helps in the future and enjoy those cold blue mountains

This is life,  I cant begin to tell you how many time's I've schedule PTO only to be fielding calls from both teammates as well as clients.  The last time I was on PTO I took a call (not knowing who it was - should have sent to VM) and it was a teammate, who after me saying im not in the office address so and so kept me on the phone for 10 minutes.  it only ended because i hung up
