Top Producer, MicroManagement?

Hey fellas, just wanted to pose an ask on how you would all handle.

Currently the top producing sdr at my company since I’ve entered, sitting on a 150%+ quota attainment after the company raised quotas (+60%) this quarter.

Problem is, despite my performance, as a team we’re behind on our overall number and I’m being pushed to continue to hit metric numbers despite being well over quota myself. This is after consistently putting in 50-60+ hour weeks to carry the team as people have been out of office.

How would you broach the conversation with your manager if you were in my position - at this rate I can’t see myself not burning out.

Radical candor is your best bet here. Approach it with a deep level of care, and if they respect you, they'll return in kind. If you approach it with complaints you are likely to get told "well, it's your job". Sometimes when we are managing down-trending teams, we as managers have to lean on our strong performers and that means pushing you over the edge. We often don't know what it means to you, but we know how it helps us avoid getting brought out back like 'Ole Yeller.

I hear you, I appreciate the perspective. Not trying to complain at all, i have no issues with goals and fully recognize it’s a performance role.

But if I’m hitting, micromanagement shuts me down more than it makes me want to work. Feels like there’s more stick than carrot, and if high performance doesn’t garner any real benefits, I don’t see why I’m pouring in high effort.

Are they micromanaging you, as in inspecting your activity, or leaning harder on you because they need more from you (due to others being bad at their job)?

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
Do you get additional compensation for going above quota?

Something i want to address - we do but at a normal ratio rather than accelerators. Incentivizes sandbagging rather than pushing forward (I’m not sandbagging but just throwing out there it doesn’t make sense).

No shame in working the system to benefit yourself. I wouldn’t say anything. I would just set myself up to succeed and not worry about the pressure to do more.

Ask if he would prefer you hit your KPIs or if you hit your Quota. Tell him how you truly feel about being burnt out due to micromanagement and remind him in sales quota is what actually matters and that KPIs are there to help you attain Quota not the other way around!😤

I like this framing - won’t put it as bluntly of course but 100% agree.

If you’re a top producer, or have a top producer, stay out of the way. Ask what is needed to continue their success. Stay on reviews and know when something bad is coming. That alone should be the motivation for others to perform.

You did what you had to do. That demands respect. Talk with your manager on the same level.
