Wait it out or find greener pastures?

I've been at my current company for 5 years and have enjoyed some kind of promotion and pay bump every year until this one. I started as an SDR and climbed my way through the ranks to Senior AE. I've thought about going into management, but #1 I like being an individual contributor, #2 it would be a paycut and when I've talked to leadership about where to go from here since my base is capped and I'm hitting OTE but the replies I get are, as we continue to grow as a company in the future we might need enterprise level reps but don't really have a timeline on that.

Should I wait it out and keep my income steady or look for other opportunities?

Some roles I see have a starting base and OTE where I am now at the top. While that seems like a logical step for me, its also a scary one. At this point I can't afford to support my family on base pay alone for a month or two while I'm ramping unless the base pay is significantly higher than my base pay now (at least 30k+)

I just heard this quote, "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, but once you get there you realize the grass is fertilized with bullshit." Meaning, there's always gonna be shit, but at least you know where the shit is where you're currently at.

If it’s me, I’m looking around. A 5 year run with progression in role is red interview meat. Why not see what’s out there and check back when you’ve got an offer?

And signing bonuses are a thing. And ramp, non-recoverable draw…there are ways to be whole. And I personally wouldn’t make a change without a significant change in compensation anyway.

100%. It seems like he's hit a natural peak in the current role, and while he shouldn't rush to leave he's likely a hot commodity.
Might as well see what's out there and leverage that kind of bonus/guarantee.

In my opinion you answered you own question when you said that you can't support your family on a lower base and that exactly what you will get if you take the management role in you company.

If there are no real significant red flags going up and you have been receiving bumps in pay then I would waited out, i would not jump ship because there is nothing this year. But alway keep your ear to the ground and keep an eye open for the next opportunity.

Always keep your family in mind when making decisions that can affect them. Truly I say, all the best. 👍👍

It really depends on your preference, yes you can probably find a higher paying role, but you would need to start over in building your territory, relationships with leadership/engineering. Your knowledge of the product and personas
You can always test the waters and decline the roles if they arent a perfect fit for you. However, I would say you should learn more why you want to be looking? Is there something wrong with your current position? How does the new one solve it

So an update on this one for y’all. I got and declined an offer because they couldn’t offer me any kind of comp guarantee for my ramp period. Would have been a great gig but ther will be others. I’m still looking and interviewing while remaining up at the top of the leader board in my current role. Hopefully the upcoming comp plan restructure org wide means I’ll make more. Starting to feel like I’ve outgrown this SMB motion though and need to get into a mid market role with a future in enterprise
