Don't try and absorb everything all at once. Take the time to teach something you have just learned back to a co-worker and have them do the same. Be coachable and remember product knowledge is important, but so is listening and just being a human being with your prospects. Hope this helps :)

That's really good advice :) Thank you!!

Do think it is okay to give a demo once you have a fair enough understanding of the product? For example, you are in a demo and the conversation leads to a point where you still have to understand the product in detail, is it ok to tell the customer that you will give a follow-up with more information. In this case, should you say to the customer that you are new and there are still some things you are learning as well or should you give another reason.

I think it's safe to give the demo if you have a fair enough understanding. However, I'm an S.D.R so at that point in the conversation I ask to book 30 minutes with my senior colleague to run them through the product and mention I will be on the call taking notes and making the introduction.

Here are some of the things we do to help new reps onboard with product knowledge:

1) watch support videos / trainings we have recorded for our customers
2) live product trainings with their managers
3) watch live and recorded product demosย
4) role play doing product demosย

pick one piece of the puzzle and become an expert in that, you will pick things up along the way naturally but making sure you are always progressing is key!

I believe picking one piece of the puzzle and becoming an expert would take up a lot of time. And might prolong the onboarding process of the new employee.ย

#1 would be using it yourself if you can, and even if you only understand a small bit of it, you'll be able to tie in things the customer needs with the UX/UI and how your product can satisfy those needs.

#2 Webinars, especially customer presented ones where they talk through why they bought your product, how they are using it and what they compared it against

#3 Shadow as many calls/demos as you can until you have confidence running your own and then continue to crib from successful people at your company

#4 Ask someone from product to walk through it with you, buy them lunch or beers etc for spending some time with you

Get the main people that deal with sales and closing and ask them to have 30 mins regularly to show you how it's done. Also, ask to join all the calls for a few weeks to get what goes on.ย
