What's the biggest lie you've told on a cold call?

Whats the biggest lie you've told on a cold call? We all know things get desperate at the end of the quarter and or month.

Was it a product feature you didnt have, something not on the roadmap, your quality of service, pricing, the fact that the next meeting would be purely educational when we all know we are going to sell them hard.

I'm usually pretty honest and I think the only thing I really do is tell them it's going to be purely educational when in reality we all know we want that next meeting afterwards.

I have a friend though who makes up lies all day on the phone, like 'oh I was just talking to a customer and they had the exact thought process you did and then this happened, now they wish they had us but it's too late, etc..'

Are you bending the truth on cold calls?

Oh gosh. That’s a good one.

Working as a BDR I scheduled a meeting for “partnership”. My company generally partners up with local consultancies to act as our reps on the ground sometimes.

I was desperate to reach my KPI, so I scheduled a dentist (sic!) from UAE, who promised me he knows a bunch of people in tech. But he wanted region exclusivity to represent and re-sell our software.

Who am I to decide if he’s good fit? After all they’re all rich there, right?

Long story short, partnership manager was also very desperate to hit his quota. So we acquired a new exclusive partner for Middle East and Africa region.

Well, just for a couple of weeks before Sales Assistants figured this out and fired partnership manager. Strangely enough, they never had any problem with me.

I don't lie about the product but I have been known to embellish customer stories or change a few details here or there to make it more relevant to the customer “¯\_(ツ)_/¯“

When people ask if it's a cold/sales call I'm always tempted to say "no, you just seem cool and I wanted to know if you want to hang out sometime." Of course it's a sales call you putz...

Nope. If I have to lie to get someone to even do an intro call that means I'll have to lie to get them to consider a proposal and lie to get them to sign the documents and that's not a route I want to go down.

I don't lie on calls and to avoid lying I drop something like this;
'I'm just an SDR and don't know all the details on that."

you're not JUST an SDR you have a tough ass job, you say,

'Thats a technical question and I would hate to give you the wrong information on that, but if you're not opposed we could schedule a time with a technical consultant on our team who is extremely knowledgeable on use cases, features, and CS. would you be open to a 10 -15 minute time for that later today or tomorrow?'

PS. always avoid 'I' always make it about them.

the most common bending of the truth is "it's on the roadmap", can't tell you how many calls I've heard about "the road map".  I feel sorry for some of the customer experience and onboarding teams I've had to work with based on some of the sellers I've bought from.

“Don’t hang up it’s my birthday” 😂.

Hahaha that’s really all I have and only do it to keep em on the phone then tell em it actually isn’t.

BUT sometimes  we have to bend and blur the truths so the prospect can see enough of it to do what’s best for their biz then both parties benefit.

Your friend is only spewing out that nonsense from his face because he really couldn’t sell his ass in prison and ppl like that get exposed quick and fall off and then in the end all of us good guys with the mad skillz get their prospects territories commission salaries AND every now and then their ladies 😂🤨

Was told this story by a fellow rep. They tried to name drop someone they hadn't actually talked with to get the meeting. Ended up working too but before it closed the Prospect asked the person who was name-dropped about it which ended up costing the rep the deal
