What was your experience staying in sales in a new country

Hey all still a bit away from making this decision since my current role is a wonderful gravy train (only AE with a 5 person BDR team and whole marketing engine supporting + a great product) but with acquisition on the horizon in 16-24 months this has been on my mind.

I'm currently in Canada but my fiancé and I both agree we'd like to experience life elsewhere and don't love the direction things are going here.

We have the choice of taking advantage of her Italian citizenship and going to Europe where as I understand compensation is similar if not a bit lower to Canada but work life balance is significantly better. Or since there's a virtual guarantee whoever buys us out will be US based, attempt to get a visa and move south where the roles are mostly the same but paid significantly higher.

Would love to hear from anyone who's made the country switch while staying in sales and anything else I should consider when making this decision.

If the move is succesful, let me know. Would love to be in italy full time rather than spending an arm to go there for a week

I can't tell you what's best for you, but I know for my financial situation I wouldn't move anywhere without a job in hand. But things may be different for you. Money isn't everything.

I think an ex-Pat situation in Italy would be pretty cool, at least for a few years. Then I'd move back home.

This is a tough one and unfortunately I can't really advise you because I don't know you or your situation that well. I typically don't think salespeople should move contries unless you speak the language in the market you will 100% be selling into. The caveat there being, if you work for yourself or for someone who really doesn't care where you are (i.e. a 1099/contract position) you can do whatever you want.
I have kicked around leaving the US for a time since I do work mostly for myself and my business partners do not care where I am, but it is a hard decision to make especially knowing that if I had to get a job in South America for example, I would have a hard time getting one in sales because I am for damn sure not a native spanish speaker.

Definitely agree with this. Sounds really cool but do not underestimate the language piece.
Even if you secure something, if there are any issues and you have to leave that org you may have massive issues finding a new gig there.

You make a fair point. Currently I have a decent grasp of French but nothing on the C1/C2 level. I’ve heard anecdotally from those who have moved abroad that once you’re immersed in it daily you can pick up a new language incredibly fast but certainly something to consider.

your gross pay will be lower + your taxes problably will be higher.

But yes work life balance is great in Italy.
