Why do teams tend to promote external into management roles causing top performers to jump ship?

I've worked at multiple growing startups and public companies where there becomes a time to hire a manager. Time and time again, I've witnessed top performers and ICs seeking their next step in their career apply only to have an external candidate hired. Without fail, the top performers ultimately end up leaving within a year. Why do companies tend to do this and how can we combat it as sellers?

It's easy to forget that the best sales people don't always make the best leaders

Yeah that's a bummer.ย  My company continues to promote from within, which I think is awesome.ย  We've blown up the last few years, went public last year, and it's clear that leadership values the people who got us here.

That's amazing and sounds like you're at a great company! That's how you really promote culture, not just high commissions (although that's always fun too)!

In a similar spot now but it looks like they are going to hire 1 from within and 1 external into management

Baggage. Just because you're a top performer doesn't mean you have the skillset to manage people or other people's pipes.ย

It's a tough call, but if you're constantly getting passed over, ask. They might think you're happy where you are. Most sales folks make more with commish than the manager anyways.ย

They should promote from within if they have qualified folks that applied. Maybe they had to bring in an outsider?

Itโ€™s definitely possible, however at the ones Iโ€™ve seen, the vast majority of the team also tends to disagree with the decision to not promote and internal leader. Maybe I can chalk it up to politics or toxic cultures...
