Work Stress - How does everyone deal with it?

I'm in my first year at a new company, have found the ramp period rather difficult but had a successful first 2 quarters.

Working from home, I'm finding the work/life balance difficult and don't find myself actually shutting off from work in the evenings.

With it being Q1 stress levels are at a all time high, would be great to hear how you cope with the work from home set up and how you deal with stress!

Create a routine. Start every day outside of the house in some way, whether that is heading to the gym or going for a walk. Structure lunch in, an afternoon break, and a "going home" time at the end of the day where you can shut your computer down and walk away.

Without a routine, you are doomed to never shut work off.

I read that as "create a poutine" and really....you're not wrong.

I haven't had coffee yet. :'(

I do like poutine.    Just not a fan of gravy in the morning, tbh.

yes, yes, and yes! Especially uninstalling slack and email. If you're working from home then you probably have agreed upon hours that you're expected to be online. If so, no one can get mad at you for not responding to a slack at 8 o'clock at night

I tend to drink, but trying to get better about it. Early morning or later in day exercise or sports helps a lot.

Having a routine is important.    UNLESS I'm expecting a specific contract or am working on a very important project with a deadline, the laptop is shut down in the late afternoon and I don't return to it.

Set time for lunch/break and make sure you leave the house for exercise.   I'll bring my work cell along, but will only check it if I'm expecting something key and need to respond.  Otherwise, I'm blasting my playlist and enjoying the scenery.    Breaks are important!

Get out and about whether thats in the morning or afternoon or just weekends.  Sink your spare time into something interactive, like bike riding, running, a practical hobby like DIY or something.  Anything that basically requires your undivided attention to do it and allows you to switch off entirely.

Either that or scotch.  A scotch with your feet up with a good movie is a good way to switch off

Time blocking is key, you need to reset or you'll burn out.

Create a “commute” environment even though you are working from home. When I was full time WFH (before it was cool to be WFH) I struggled with creating the separation. I started going for a 30 min walk at end of day to simulate a “commute”. I leave my computer in my bag, but leave phone on for emergency client stuff.

I would say that a routine is key to having a good balance at home. Try to set a schedule and try out what works best for you. Write it out and tape it somewhere in your office. Try to stick to it for at least one week.

1.) Most important thing I ever did was reflect on what stressing about it does for me, the answer each time was absolutely nothing.
2.) Find a hobby, working out, craft beer, pickleball, whatever it is but keep busy
3.) Realize that stress is inevitable, everyone does it, accept it and channel it into something.

Set calendar breaks throughout the day to go outside without a screen for 10 minutes each time. This includes your phone.

Also White Claw. Lots and lots of claw.

One way that helps me shut off after the day if to do an activity before rejoining the family ( or what ever you do next after work)

For me it can be as simple as a 10 min work out, go for a walk with the dogs, do something around the house. but SOMETHING for your brain to attach to to signal that work is done.

also if you mind races like mine does, writing things down (on your phone or on a pad of paper) could help so you dont keep thinking about it and become super distracted.

All valid points on this thread. Hubberman has great materials here: https://hubermanlab.com/tools-for-managing-stress-and-anxiety/), and from personal experience, I'd just add the following:
1) sleep: get some and if you are in wartime, track your debt and pay some during weekends
2) clean diet: whatever you follow, squeeze in micronutrients (spinach and disgusting veggies + fruits) or at least get some athletic greens.
3) exercise daily, even if you only have 15 mins
4) Vitamin d and fish oil: D saved me during covid and kept it around, turns out the efficiency is no fucking joke, and even common for office workers living in tropical areas
5) Whim hoff breathing and cold showers: the breathing I'd do during the most stressing days as a reset button on demand, the shower just feels good like an accomplishment
