Would love feedback on where to go from here

The last 12 years of my life are nothing like I could have imagined as I'm sure most of you have had a similar experience.

Of those years 8-9 haven sales experience I'd say. I've done real estate, retail, recruiting, fundraising, teach sales to students, started a business, and that pretty much sums it up.

The last 5-6 years have probably been the strangest. I went through a lot at the very end of college and worked various ministry roles, leading in a couple. These are mostly where the recruiting and fundraising took place. I also led some leadership development during that time.

I'm wanting to get into tech sales. Is my experience so unrelated that I'll instantly get turned away from this industry? In my mind it's not far off but what does everyone's experience say?

If you already know how to talk to people & communicate, you are golden. Technology is something you can learn. Some larger orgs might want to know if you are familiar with MEDDIC/Challanger methods etc so just look up sales techniques to have some formal knowledge handy. GL!

I’ve seen people with all kinds of backgrounds find success in tech sales. You might start at a relatively entry-level compared to what you’d find in a field where you have more experience. This field offers the opportunity for rapid growth, though, so you can rise quickly if you’re good at your job.

I think the best approach is trying to get an SDR role in tech. Not only is it easier to get than a closing role, it also teaches essential skills needed to be a successful AE. You going to want to do research on how SDR work is done in tech though, so you can sound knowledgeable in interviews.

From your brief description, without seeing a resume, I’d say your problem is going to be longevity in any given position. That’s a tough one to overcome.

Can you all stop promoting the “academy” or “such and such post” when people ask these real questions? No article, blog or academy gives the real answer when someone is looking to switch industries and is a seasoned sales rep with experience, yet not trying to be an SDR in the “coveted” SaaS world. This industry has got to get over itself a tiny bit.
