Question for the people who have unlimited/had it previously from someone who’s never had unlimited before: did you actually take more than 15-20 days off per year? Did you feel inclined to work on these days?

My current company has unlimited and "requires" 5 weeks (also shifted quarters by 1 month so we get the whole Christmas - New Years week off). They do enforce on the non-sales roles (just made an ops guy take 3 weeks off), and my manager is real good at telling us to take off and will gladly handle any in-flight deals for us.

It ain't perfect, and at the end of the day we all have to hit out number, but they are trying

I went from unlimited to 15 days when my company was acquired. Our business unit kept its "take off when you need it" mentality and I banked several years worth of PTO and when I quit I got a fat check. Unlimited PTO is primarily to benefit employer, not employees.

It honestly depends on the company culture around taking PTO. If the leadership team and managers actually let you take unlimited PTO, the flexibility and the random Friday off for "mental wellness day" is real nice :) 


However I know a lot of companies who have unlimited PTO policy, but don't actually mean it. People end up taking less time off or feel pressured to work on vacation. At that point, it's better to have 15 days of PTO so you know it's there for you to take.

Although unlimited isn’t “unlimited” (because you’re typically still not going to schedule a lot of days of in a sales position) you still have to account for all the days you stop working early, do minimal work, or don’t work at all without giving any time of heads up to management.

I've never taken more than 10 in the past 5 years, so I guess 15 is just as good with me. I'd rather have a "2-week minimum" as some companies offer.

It would depend if it's truly unlimited. Will they bully you if you try to take 5 days off? You have to be cognizant and read between the lines.

I put unlimited although I do no like unlimited PTO. But 15 is even lower than the legal minimum in Belgium. I have 26days and that’s crazy low Over here.
