Your best CRM blunders? Here's how I accidentally discounted at 99.98%

I needed to create a quote for the customer. Extremely urgent.

Salesforce CPQ would not allow me to create this quote for some reason. Not unusual I thought, our Salesforce has issues half of the time.

So I reached out to the quote support team. They were utterly confused and tried everything they could and eventually directed me to a Salesforce admin/ engineering/ pricing team. They said that if I can give them a few days, they will prioritize this request and create this functionality for me. 15 people got involved and after 4 days, a very happy team said that the functionality exists now and that I can go ahead and try it and quote what I needed. So I did.

Customer was pushing on me and asking for an update for pricing every day because they had a management meeting coming up and he wanted to secure the budget for it.

The price on the quote seemed somewhat low but I thought it was because this was all a new process. I sent the quote to the customer. A few moments later an extremely happy and thrilled customer rings me and ask if everything is alright with me and how have I been doing lately.

Customer then cheerfully announces that this quote I sent has 99.98% discount on it and he just wanted to double check before they place the order since it seemed a "a little bit too low".

I mean maybe I should find a job in a non-profit...

Turns out that this process was changed years ago but because it was such a rare product, they did not bother to update the information or remove it from the price book. Salesforce and pricing teams were happy to add it and it didn't flag it to director level for high discounts.

Everyone had a laugh (except me) and customer bought something different.

LAWL... My CRMs have always been so locked up by my ops teams that it was impossible to sneak anything through, in a former role the rev ops team left a costly error in a line item for one of our products and we had to eat 20k worth of professional services. last time that fuck up happened

It's a fun tale. Yeah our ops team locks too much away and then with stuff like this they're too helpful... We have some mandatory lines for professional services. It's ridiculous because only set people can remove it and customer doesn't need it nor did I pitch it

This is wonderful. What a good contact to not try to hold you to it.

As a former development officer I assure you that this would be a death knell to a not-for-profit. Next to fundraising sales is easy. . . and it pays A LOT more.

Yeah customer was pretty amazing now that I think of it.
Fundraising seems pretty prestigious and then don't call themselves sales people right?

I had a prep notes titled "Meeting with the Big Boss Man" when meeting with a CFO. My manager printed my prep directly out of SFDC and the CFO saw the title since it printed out the title in a very large font. I dont think he liked us calling him boss man

Well they couldn't buy it with my discount of 99.98% but I got them to agree for similar for a good price... Not for free.
