A discussion for all my history geeks

I love history, from early humans, Mesopotamia, Rome, WWII, revolutions, all of it fascinates me. However, I always tend to go into the darkest periods of our human history. I feel it's where we can learn the most from our nature, but that's just me.

Listening to Dan Carlin always brings up the question what if so and so army faced this army, who would win?

One question that I ponder is, what if the Greek Legions under Alexander the Great faced the Mongolians under Genghis Khan and his sons? Would Khan ultimately win? Maybe?

I don't know how well the roman legions would battle against the Mongol horde. The Mongol soldiers are quick, can fire arrows from horseback, and are able to ambush and disappear within mins. However, we got the highly efficient and tactically gifted Greeks, who can build a fort overnight and defend it as if they were fighting in home soil. And the long list of mercenaries that came with the Greek army.

I like to think the Mongol Horde is simply too much for the Romans, and can only be simulated in Total War melees.

A great what if and would love to hear what you guys think would happen or other scenarios you've played out in your heads.

Alexander has the tactics, the experience, the cavalry itโ€™s hard to think heโ€™d loose. I honestly believe he has been the greatest general in history, surpassing tactics even Napoleon would have trouble with.

Alexander had the ambition, and he just wanted to conquer. And I have to say that he did have great war tactics. He himself took over South Asia. Mongols in the other note took 2 or 3 generations to take over Poland and some other regions of Southern Europe.ย

The most amazing thing about Alexander is how young he was, and yet how much land he conquered with little experience.

That's true, and believe me I take that into consideration by this point Mongols had cannons and gunpowder, also riding a horse for them was about 1000 years of nomads riding, hunting and fighting all from horseback. All of that versus about 15 years of tenacity and conquering power of Alexander the Great.

I guess fighting the Hordes of Attila the Hut is more fair, due to the technology advancements weren't that great between those two periods weren't that great. However, we all know that Alexander would RUMP Attila no problem exactly because of that. Greater tactics and well all together had better leadership surrounding Alexander.

That's why having that gap makes it more interesting haha

The Mongolians waxed so many people that the temperature of the earth literally got cooler. The Romans under Alexander were absolutely no joke but the Mongolian Horde was not playing games. These absolute mad lads would set enemiesโ€™ bodies on fire and launch them back at their compadres from catapults. Ghengis had no mercy.

Yes they did, they were fierce and ruthless enemies. I think the fear from their enemies won them more battles than the actual fighting.

I loooove Carlinโ€™s hardcore history podcast that covers WW1! I knew almost nothing about it until I listened. Everything in school was always about WW2.

Also, a little off topic, but kind of on topic - We have tons of conversations on the sales floor about the teams from different regions/segments and what it would be like if we all got into a brawl like in Gangs of New Yorkโ€ฆ anyone else ever do this??ย

For sure Alexander would be the clear winner, as he was the master of a combined cavalry and infantry with the back up of all those archers.ย

Mongolians were master horsemen, but they were very one dimensional.

Also Iโ€™m a big Alexander history nerd soย

I can imagine him using elephants against the hordes. Dunno how effective would be but if I had a time machine seeing these battles from a hot air balloon this is something I'd go back to see. Alexander's battles and Mongolian hordes ravaging through Europeย

This one is tough. I am leaning toward the Mongolians just because of their ruthless, gutless, and just outright evil. I think that their no-care attitudes would put fear into the Romans and would affect the maneuvers that Alexander would try.ย

I love the History talk. We should bring up a lot of posts like this, and different questions and controversy's from history.

I think the same, even though Alexander had the tenacity to take over half of the known world back then in the span of maybe 15 years and the Mongols took several generations, their tenacity was unmatched.ย

I'd love to post more about history and see more history posts! WWi and WWII are my jam!

It would be so fun, I heard that melees are going to be a bigger thing in Total War IV, don't know how much truth is behind all the rumours tho.

I believe that in order to more efficiently determine the winner, we could take into account "N" number of factors.

Among them: the climatic season of the year, the terrain, the number of troops and the motivation for the fight.

Once these factors are taken into consideration as an example, the winner could be defined.

To a certain extent just the motivation factor Alexander would win it. For the Mongols to conquer it took Genghis Khan's sons were the ones to eventually make it to Poland.ย

The ultimate goal would be Poland?
Or is it only considered as a key point, to ensure victory?
