Account Executive to Account Manager / Customer Success

Hey y'all,

Sometime in the last month, I woke up and realized that I might be better off moving out of sales. I'm already an extremely anxious person and I don't think having a huge number over my head and the "what have you done for me lately" mentality is the best spot for me.

I really don't like my manager so maybe that has something to do with it but after 7+ year as an AE I'm thinking about trying something new.

I spoke to a friend who has never been an AE but loves his job as an AM rep. He said it's a pretty low pressure role but a nice base salary and opportunity to make some commission.

Is there anyone out there that has transitioned from AE to AM / SC?

  • Are you happy you made the move?
  • Are you still beat over the head with building pipeline and quota attainment?
  • Do you find you make considerably less / more income?
  • Do you find yourself more or less stressed?
  • What are some key things to consider when deciding to make the switch?

Any input is helpful!

AMs and CS still have numbers.

They are sometimes purely renewal, but most of the time include mid-contract upgrade/upsell and a positive net-dollar-retention value (aka growth number)

Your anxiety will not dissipate as you become an AM/CS rep...it may, in fact, increase.

I've met some AMs/CSMs that make good money, but it's still hard-fought and gritty work to try and save shitty and risky accounts while also managing the "good ones" to remain happy.

TL;DR the same shit exists no matter which side of the equation you are on.

As always, mental health and wellbeing is the top priority.

I actually did the reverse here, and came into sales from a Customer Success role.

It's a different kind of stress in CS, it can also be long hours. I found ultimately that the pay didn't justify, prompting my switch to sales.

But I was basically like kicking the can down the road.

I would agree with your friend; I've started an AM role myself, and really enjoy. More about relationship building than hunting.

Hope this helps!

Only know one person who made the switch and they love it, however they just hated outbound so it makes sense why they enjoy AM life

I hope you enjoy support calls and hearing, "whose idea was it to buy this piece of crap". Lol

I did AM and AE altough the AE role I'm talking about was more a hybrid type thing. I prefer to do more than just sell the prospect.

To be honest I think it's quite obvious if you are a hunter or a farmer type of person. I'm by nature more the farmer type guy. However, I'm currently in a hunting role :D

Are you happy you made the move?
would be yes Are you still beat over the head with building pipeline and quota attainment?
Normally you still have a renewal and upsell quota Do you find you make considerably less / more income?
I hear from other the pay can be a bit less. New contracts seem to pay more Do you find yourself more or less stressed?
I think it depends on the clients. If it clicks and you have a great product it's problably a bit less stressful. Also easier to get in contact with the people you want to reach What are some key things to consider when deciding to make the switch?
Do you want to service people or hunt

I've known people that have made the move and have been happier as well as didn't like it and went back to sales. Only you will be able to decide.

I have a couple of friends who didn’t. They still have numbers and retention to achieve as a part of their role.

Low pressure, less money but they are happy with what they are doing.

I’m in the same exact predicament and have the same exact number of experience years in sales as you, thanks for the question and the answers.. it seems like we have to go through it to know, also one thing for sure is you have to be ok with a lower basic and hope to make the difference in commission
