AE - Key account manager Promotion, limited pay bump but same Salary

Hi fellow sellars,

maybe a special situation I would like to get your thoughts on

I got staffed at a new project and got an email today by HR to be prompted to key account manager - YAY. However the salary package is the exact same I'm currently having.

I wasn't even expecting the title since I already work on this project for a few months and they gave me a bump in pay for several months for going on the project. so far so good.

now I how a bit more clarity

1) my target is going to increase by 40% (to get a 100% target was already quite hard)
2) I have a few select list of accounts (5)
3) there is no pipeline in the new project build and I had to handover almost everything I had

so after the paybump period I don't know what's gonna happen, and if the package stays the same I'm taking a cut with the 40% target increase. As they now ask me to sign the updated contract (this came from HR not my manager) is this something I should address with my Manager?

things that I'm a bit nervous about
- I'm on a 50/50 split here, not sure but I assume a different distribution for key account managers
-what's a reasonab ask or maybe I should just be happy and shut up?

never was promoted internally so please excuse the question. I'm also seeing that something similar happens to other people and the notion is push or run, wanted to get the insights on this specific case - please help!

They are trying to screw you over with the title. Stand your ground.

Yup. I would also try to negotiate holding onto the previous pipeline while you build new stuff. If you're getting a big quota bump with no existing business and no window to close your current opps, this feels like a quick path to a PIP.

It sounds like you need to dig into it further and get a better understanding. You NEED to understand the answer to this:
'I'm on a 50/50 split here, not sure but I assume a different distribution for key account managers'
Often 'promotions' don't necessarily make you more money in sales, it depends on a lot of factors. Get more info before you make a decision, and feel free to try and negotiate. They know you're good, so leverage that.
You DO NOT want a reduction in your take home.

Bun that, I had a situation like that and made a move cause it was clear I wasn’t valued.

Take it up to your manager before signing anything. Get all the questions answered that you have in mind and doubtful about - its your right.

Update: seems someone fucked up internally and I wasn’t even supposed to know since they haven’t finilized the commercials for the promotion that my manager suggested - my manager is handling it - so maybe happy ending

Another update, my manager called me today and said besides the pay bump for this year there is nothing we can do. We can have a discussion next year about it and this is coming from HR. I said I’d like to talk again with my manager and his manager again about this. I’m a bit surprised because in my last call he said he’s going to address it, now we back to status quo.

As @jefe said, I don’t want a reduction of take home and need to negotiate this today even if effective maybe feb next year, right?

Problem is I’m already pulled in this position for 2ish months so I think there is so much pushback I can do. Also an option to take the promotion and move on with the title to a different company after a while without the pay raise.

Any thoughts how to play this?

I think you need to do what you can to ensure you get paid more, even if that's in the new year. BUT you also need to keep an eye on what's out there, and perhaps use the title to shop around in the near future and parlay it into an even more significant increase in take home at a new company.
@Sunbunny31 @GDO any other thoughts?

Yeah, I agree. It's not really a pay raise when you are doing more for less. A title increase doesn't pay the bills. But - that can be helpful when looking for new roles. I'd agree to start shopping on the down low and see if there's anything out there that might be a better financial fit.

Before signing off on ANYTHING... the ethical approach for your company would be to offer you a ramp period (6-8 months) to allow you to build your pipeline.

Starting at zero with the clock running is a wage cut regardless of the title change.

Follow up to this is "what happened" to the previous employee in that position? Seems like they're in a predicament and they're reacting to whatever has unfolded.

This happened to me with HR turning round saying you have to be in the role for 6 months, prove yourself and you will get the base pay increase. Even though I was doing the job already for the last 2 months and hit target 🎯 MOM. I can say that base increase never arrived.

Just saw this and unless there is room for more, I wouldn't take it. Promotions come with more money in my book
