Bad Timing or Doing Something Wrong (Army > MBA >BDR)

So after a stint in the army I got my MBA at a top school. Rather than a cushy operations job through an adopt-a-veteran program, I sucked it up and went the BDR route to get my foot in the door.

Became the top BDR (pure outbound + some discovery calls/demos) at a public company at 10 mos and have massively outgrown this role. The company missed last year and decided to consolidate territories for existing reps instead of promoting me - so I went on the hunt for an AE-SMB role.

Getting a lot of rejections before the first round. I realize it's a bad time, but I feel like a high energy hunter is something companies need right now.

Sales Approach

I've been told I have a very dominant style of selling, but I'm not a loud/extroverted person. Is there a specific vertical or type of company I should be looking at in this case? Specific persona?

Companies

Salesforce? Going to put some time into getting in there next. Should I bother with somewhere like Zoom post-pandemic? Should I try and go for big dogs like $CRM / $ZM or set my sights towards a startup?

*I should also say that I'm Canadian which definitely provides some more limitations*

**Thanks for your time, appreciate everything here. This place helped a lot with my transition.

So if your ultimate goal would be SFDC. I 100% recommend networking/prospecting your way in. There is a ERG called Vetforce for Veterans, do a search on LinkedIn I assume some put it on their linkedin.

Also there is free training for veterans, maybe find a free training a ping a recruiter that you are interested and completed the training

Huge thanks, I've been plugged in there for a while but they definitely seem focused on administrators rather than sales positions. Will start hitting some of the community up

Yes, start finding creative ways to get in with potential decision makers at SFDC.

Thanks for the tag Foxy. @xotcitlyou should be foremost looking to work with companies in the defence and security space, they love hiring vets and it actually helps them for certain bids to government projects as you can draw on your experience.

Second, connect with transition groups and HR companies working with them. You'll never get a good position in this market competing with the bulk of seekers, so find someone who understands the experience and skills you bring as a vet. Let them sell you to the employer.

Third, make sure you use resources to convert the "Military speak" of your resume to proper business English.

Being Canadian, you have less transition support than our US friends but exist in a smaller pool of other candidates so it is kind of a wash.

I'm a member of this org, but got nothing from it yet. It is still a good networking group and there are a few like it.: https://www.linkedin.com/company/treble-victor-group/

What industry do you want to be in? I see you're in Toronto. NGL I'm actually looking for a sales rep right now...

Well for transparency, I only served 5 years and I'm not bilingual.I'm working enterprise B2G right now, so prospecting to State/Federal while running with some of the SMB deals at local/tribal gov.

I'm industry neutral tbh. Have an MBA/MPA, worked as a Bde Adjt/Ops O, have sold lumber & b2g financial saas.

My secret to success involves waking up at 5:30am to read government audits for 3hrs before I call for the day - I can find anything interesting.

I'll DM my resume when I get to my laptop so you can see if you think its worth a discussion

DM doesn't work for me, I'm on android. If you want to email [email protected] we can connect.

TBH language is not a problem, I need someone who can be a self-starter, can run research and generate/chase their own leads and it sounds like you might be a good fit for that.

Lets meet offline and see where you are currently and what you are looking for in the short and long term. I'm happy to help out regardless of where you want to end up.

End of year hiring can be tough so donโ€™t get down on yourself quite yet. Have you looked at where ex-colleagues have gone? With your style, look for roles selling to CISO, CFO, CRO.

Itโ€™s great that you have identified the company you wanna join, as next steps I would connect with the hiring manager and try to hop on a quick coffee chat. Getting through application route is good but networking is that additional push that can speed up the process.

You might want to broaden your search (if you havenโ€™t already) past the name brand big players and look at great smaller companies that are out there. In this market, itโ€™s definitely going to take persistence and patience.

You have an MBA. I would check with your alumni association career services center. They may have good options for you to explore. Good luck

Can you just target small SaaS companies that sell into the government? Seems like an awesome path.

In the U.S. there are several recruiting firms that specialize in placing veterans into good jobs in Corporate America. Not sure if those exist in Canada, but it would be worth looking into. Most large companies recognize the value veterans bring to the workplace (discipline, integrity, work ethic, loyalty, sense of mission, etc.) and are looking to hire vets. Good luck!

There's no straight line to success. Sometimes we do things in life in different order. Maybe even a smaller company with really unique product or a challenger? Zoom don't know if they really sold yet, Salesforce is good option. I'm sure you'll find something soon

Can you tap your MBA network for referrals? Did anyone in your class / from your school start a SaaS company?

Consider looking at ServiceNow instead of just Salesforce - they have an academy just for veterans, and their federal team has an insane veteran presence. Same space as SFDC and a lot of people go there after.

Maybe upload an anonymous version of your resume / cv / cover letter. Also if you are reaching out via cold emails / DM, do share samples here too.
Would love to see.

If you join a SaaS company and thrive at the beginning due to inbound leads and good SDR and then sales start going down due to a change of SDR and less inbounds, does that mean youโ€™re not a competent sales person or does it mean itโ€™s time to move on to another company?
