"Baited and Switched" by our Sales Policy Team

Hello Fellow Sales Professionals (Savages),

I work for a large enterprise software company. I was fortunate to perform at a high enough to earn a promotion from MM to Enterprise.

I have been having an amazing year and the timing of the promotion was during a time I had some renewal opportunities with uplift that I was working to close. I was concerned that I may lose out on the commission on these deals with the move mid-year so I looked to my Sales Policy Team for guidance.

I outlined my concerns and they informed me (in writing) that as long as the deals closed while I was still in my current role I would get paid accordingly. I was able to get all of the deals signed on September 29th 2021 before I officially moved on 10/1/2021. They both had a start date of 10/31/2021.

Fast forward to last week when my Xactly was not updating, I am now being told that because I do not cover the specific product set in my new role that I sold in these deals I will not be compensated. (nor will any other AE) This is because the orders "activated" while I was in my new role. This is a pretty substantial commission check which is why I am here looking for guidance. This is the "policy".

The compensation team is very firm on the "policy" and does not care that I was misguided by the sales policy team when I inquired about this. I filed an HR ticket today and am waiting to hear back. I did flag this with my manager and he basically stated the obvious but said I had a "good case".

Ask: has anyone else dealt with situations like this and could they provide insight on how they handled it? I understand I am in a compromised spot but would appreciate feedback or ideas on how I can still receive this commission check ahead of the holiday's. People to talk to, talking points, etc. are all appreciated.

Sounds like it is going to boil down to what your policy considers "closed".

You're probably out of luck if the company considers an account closed after the start date.

For me a deal isn't closed until payment has been received. Doesn't matter when the ball starts rolling. I've had jobs where a deal was closed as soon as the contract was signed. I've also been in an org where the deal wasn't closed until after their first month of being active.

If it comes down to a "fight" I would say it all hinges on your company's definition of deal "closed"

Agree, it's shade AF. But when it's won/closed is separate than won/pending sign... maybe just have a coffee chat with your boss. Say you hustled that deal through for the good of the team and think you should still get a slice of that pie.

This is some bullshit to pull right after you proved your worth and earned a promotion, especially in a less than month window.

I'm always of the mind that you should be compensated for any business you bring in and that closes while under your supervision. This includes (within reason) comp after leaving a company.

The company shouldn't want you going into your new role with a grudge. I would bet your old manager isn't missing out on their piece.

Id bring up what a good person would do for their employee in that situation. Odds are they are going to pay you.

As someone who's been burned in a similar situation... ANYTHING regarding payment has to be documented.  For some reason, memories start getting foggy and people start forgetting these discussions when it comes to getting paid. I hope you get paid out but this is going to take an internal stakeholder to move this to your favor.
