Empathy and compassion. Be kind, but don't say more than you need to. That person has something going on that you know nothing about. Be kind, then move on to your day.

This right here, you don't have to be nice, you don't have to be mean. But you can be empathetic and compassionate for them.ย 
Don't talk shit behind peoples back either, if they are talking shit with you, likely they are talking shit about you.ย
