Biz Time At A Bad Time

Hey Fam,

Just curious, how often does your manager ask for meetings, reports or even follow ups during your weekends or PTOs and if it's even normal.

Just asking cuz, I was asked to join at least two Biz meetings in the last month during my offs, for being told C'mon man it wouldn't even take an hour.

How far would you tolerate that, and what do you think the best approach to tell your boss to F*OFF, that ain't your time!

Never, CashMax. Never. You're allowed to have a life outside of work.

Sorry, not familiar with verbiage "during your offs" assuming that you are being asked to do join meetings during PTO?

My manager never messages me when I am on PTO, which I am thankful for. Although, not sure I would respond anyways

Does your company keep weekend hours? If so, I suppose weekend meetings could be normal.
Are you an hourly or salaried employee? Because that can make a difference in how you are scheduled and when.
If you literally have consistent days off and/or are not scheduled on a day that a meeting is put on your calendar, you could just reach out to the manager, state that you're off that day, and ask if the meeting be rescheduled to meet your availability.

Nope they don't keep weekend hours, and yeah I'm a salaried employee.4 sure will try to state that to him but hopefully it wouldn't leave a negative impact, guess they believe that WFH reps are already in heaven and need to sacrifice a bit even in their weekends!

During your next 1:1 I would say hey, I noticed you seem to catch up on work during nights, weekends, etc. I've been working on better work life balance and I wanted to give you a heads up that unless you specify that something is an emergency, I'll assume it's ok to respond and follow-up the next business day or after I'm back from PTO. Having that balance will help me be more invested as an employee during work hours and prevent burnout.

Never in my company. We are on time off, we are strictly disconnected. May be some quick slack conversation but not meetings and never during the weekends.

Pet peeve! I'm guessing it's a smaller company?
That ones tough to deal with because it's often built into the culture of the organization. If the CEO/Founder expects leaders to be available 24/7 they start to expect the same of those reporting to them. Tough cycle to break but if you're comfortable maybe speak up to your boss.

Hard Pass... Unless it is an urgent situation. That is a sign of VERY WEAK leadership. (which is why people leave managers, not companies) Once on your calendar, set it up to decline meetings automatically.

Yeah right, but what about if he directly contacts me on my phone,do you think it's wise to decline his call(s):)

At the end of the day, what kind of culture do you want to exist in? Again, unless it is urgent - he is showing a total lack of respect and professionalism. And something tells me this is not the only issue he represents.

Sounds weird! You deserve PTO. I am not sure how it is in Egypt but in some countries it is actually illegal for the employer to do that

Illegal unless both parties agreed on something else.
It's the managers themselves most of the times who might push for that and the reason could be that your weekend might not match theirs , so they might not just prefer to do the briefing/meeting all over again with you or some of your team and just wait till you come back to office, so instead they just ask you to join at your weekends/PTOs to apparently avoid the double effort which is a part of their job!

Okay well if illegal then I would start documenting everything. Screenshots, call logs, emails, messages...
Not saying that hey sue them but look at what options there are and then you'll have the evidence ready and it'll focus your efforts instead of becoming overly frustrated about it
