Building team- do you need BDRs right now

Hi everyone! I am a Sales Manager and building out my first team. I started out as a BDR and worked my way up to now running team. We have about 400 targets today, some mega whale potential ($1M+ ARR) and lots of singles and doubles ($20K+). I am looking to build a team (I think) of 5 individuals with 5 years of experience including doing BDR work.


Do you think BDRs are necessary for any sales organization? I'm leaning towards no because of the required ramp time and the success rate of the individuals.

Why would a BDR need 5 years of working experience? Or are you looking for full cycle AEs who will be supported by BDRs?

It's all contracting. I have a buddy who has an AI product for retail auto. He's having trouble getting funded, so he's got a linkedin ad for a founding partner.

Got 20 apps from Meta sellers just today. It ain't getting better.

Looks like hiring AEs who have BDR experience so they can skip hiring BDRs. So: full cycle AEs.

The question is who does your cold calling then? If you’re doing full cycle AE you may need to pay them more than a standard AE to compensate for additional work.

BDR is a key success to many current orgs,best plan to me is to hire these 5 reps for a quota to achieve within 6 mo,if the company got the numbers it needs then great if not, so at least you tried!

If you join a SaaS company and thrive at the beginning due to inbound leads and good SDR and then sales start going down due to a change of SDR and less inbounds, does that mean you’re not a competent sales person or does it mean it’s time to move on to another company?
