C-Suite / SVP / VP -- Negotiating Severance Clause?

For those in a C-Level (minus 1 or 2) position, how prevalent is severance in recent contracts/offers you've negotiated?

2023 was a tough year for candidates, as the market shifted in favor of employers. Prior to that, certain comp components were more common such as signing bonus, first quarter commission guarantee, etc.

I'm wondering if you as either a hiring manager or candidate have seen in recent times severance clauses being either offered without negotiation, or being successfully negotiated in?

I've had a couple of colleagues (one VP and another C-Level) each offered 4-month and 6-month severance without having to ask for it.

What are you experiencing?

Thanks!

I didn’t get it unsolicited, but it was a quick yes when I asked for a termination without cause clause. 6 months.

The problem with that is they can always think of a "cause" when letting you go.

Always throw in a golden parachute, and I usually get between 3 and 6 months with prorated On Target bonus through that period as well. Up to them if it’s lump sum of normal pay.

If they are taking you from a current job, then you have good leverage to ask for a big severance package. If you're unemployed, its harder but you should definitely ask. 3-6 months is a good round number and if you're c-suite in a mid-large company 1 year+
