Change company or look for promotions?

Hi there!

In these days, moving to another company is the fastest way to increase your salary, but, Do you think it is better for the long term to look for internal promotions in one company or to switch company looking for a salary increase?

Let me know your feedback and real life cases :)

depends on what you are looking to do.....if you are ONLY concerned about getting a higher salary than yes changing jobs its the best way to go.

but there is lots of value in staying in one place, and growing as much as you can.

ive made MULTIPLE job changes under 1 year. and its kinda annoying.
especially in ENT sales, it takes 1 year just to feel like you know what you are doing.

This is too generic - is there a specific reason you are asking? Without context this is just a point farm attempt.

The point was knowing if yu think is more important for the long term a great CV (promotions and internal growth) or increasing incomes by jumping over different companies.

Different people will have different results.

Sometimes your first company is not a good fit. If you stay long term, you're going to have a tough time, so it makes sense to find another company. On the flip side, sometimes reps are chasing dollars, and jump ship frequently, slightly bettering their position each time. Maybe they'd do better staying at one place longer, but who will ever know? Honestly, it comes down to what your end goal is, but also understand that there's no single path to your desired outcome. For example, my peers at my current company have different CVs and work histories than I do, and we're all where we are right now anyway.

Yeah, for example, I'm hitting a bit of a crossroads at my current employment but I really think that even though I could jump ship and get a few more dollars in base in the next 6-12months staying the course with a company that I know I have a voice in and I'm putting in the structural work for money to keep rolling in a big way for the next 5 years...

It's a situational question and saying that always leaving or always staying for promotion is impossible to do...for me at least. We live in a grey world and rarely are thinks black and white regardless of what how people like to paint it that way to push their initiatives.

Changing Companies

One: companies are not loyal to you. If you have a slump, you may be on the receiving end of a PIP. They don't care how many good quarters/months were in the past.

Two: internal promotions generally take longer to occur than external. Someone is willing to take a chance on an external candidate for a promotion.

Three: if you're not jobhopping, someone else is and making more money. I know I make more than others that started a job and stayed there for 5 years instead of jobhopping like myself.

Four: you're always learning and there's more to learn in jobhopping. You get a variety of experiences and environments. You see what to look for and what to avoid at a much faster clip and can take that into your own leadership style.

Whatโ€™s your goal? Make more money or get promoted to a higher designation? It might be a longer process in your current organization but again it depends if you are comfortable.

The idea is to build a trustable CV with a strong career development.

If you are looking for knowledge and money, I would tell you that the best thing you can do is move to another company.
Now, if you are comfortable, you like the project you are in and you feel that you can take advantage of what you are learning from your work team, you could give it a vote of confidence and grow within it.

Whichever the better opportunity in your own terms Go get it ,for me it doesn't matter whether if it's internal or external increase I would go for whoever will appreciate what I'm doing more and pay me more!!

It is interesting the Millenial and Gen z point of view as our parents seem to be in just one company to develop their own careers. I think the fastest way to increase your incomes is to change, but promoting is better for your CV in the long term.

To move up, you often have to move out. Getting a promotion can be difficult because you can easily be identified as the person who does X job and thatโ€™s it.

But job hopping can be risky. Seniority has its privileges. One of those can be some sense of job security.

A 10% raise isnโ€™t worth being out of work for 3-6months.

Most of the internal promotions are difficult and long-term, and the return on promotion may not be according to your expectation. In the event that moving to another job will bring you a better return, then it is a right decision.

If you have great people that you are working with, stay and go for the promotion. If they are just kinda meh, change. Keep on eye on your own company's job boards and see if they are trying to pull a fast one salary wise and hire people for your position with a higher salary.

Depending on how you're doing at the current company. In this economy, the top performing AEs are in the safest place, so I can only suggest asking for a promotion.
