I used to sell e-commerce software that powered thr ratings and reviews for most of the internet. Traveled to meet a prospect (shoe company) on the west coast. We had already done a PoC and the marketing team was bought in. Last step was to meet CEO/founder and get their buy in. CEO is running late (typical) then barges into conference room and says "What are we meeting about?" to which I reply "Increasing conversion and average order value through ratings and reviews!" Her reply: "I hate reviews and never read them..."

I was nearly kidnapped.ย 

This is one of my favorite stories to tell.ย 

This was my first presentation as a field rep EVER. Bought lunch for a clinic in BUFU Indiana. I didn't have my corporate card yet, so I had been using my manager's card until mine arrived... but this clinic refused to get lunch from a place that would take a card over the phone...ย 

Okay, no big deal. I'll put it on my card and get reimbursed. Fine.ย 

So I drive out to Indiana and go to the restaurant to pick up the food they ordered and bring it back to the clinic... I get there and theres a table of folks sitting there waiting by the counter. I go up to the counter and tell them who I am and the table of folks jump up and yell "OH! That's for us!"ย 

What? Why are you guys here?ย 

Whatever. I end up sitting with them at the table for five-ten minutes while their food is finishing up and they proceed to just SLAM my product the whole time. Great. Also, the lead veterinarian that I was selling to?ย 

Had no teeth and no shoes.ย 

Good. Normal. Very cool and good.ย 

We get the food and leave and I follow them to their clinic which is in the middle of nowhere. I do my presentation which took twice as long as it should have because they fought me at every detail. Fine. I can handle objections. They then proceeded to continuously redirect me by asking weird questions.ย 

For six hours.ย 

I had left my cell phone in my car because I was dumb and was like "oh, I don't want it to go off while I'm presenting!"ย 

Slowly but surely, everyone who worked at the clinic got up and left with the exception of the two veterinarians (who were married) and their daughter, who was the office manager. They then asked me to go back to their home with them. I refused. They blocked the door. I refused. They continued to block the door. I accepted.ย 

... and then ran like hell to my car and peeled out of the parking lot and NEVER went back. I've had two veterinary sales jobs since then and I refuse to call on that account.ย 

After hearing this story, I don't think anyone would blame me.
