Cold calling is dying (fast) - what are you doing about it?

Cold-calling is a relic of the past for sure. As you may have seen, Meryl Lynch recently banned new brokers from making cold calls.

That doesn't mean it can't still be effective in certain situations, but it is fast dying. It won't be long before all phones will block unidentified calls. At which point, salespeople will need to develop other tools of connection.

I'm seeing the best salespeople become a combination of marketer and sales. They're learning the game of digital marketing and mastering it, in addition to traditional sales skills such as qualifying and closing.

At the same time, since fewer are making cold calls I'm seeing an opportunity in some industries. For example, in healthcare finance, one of my clients is seeing good success on cold calls simply because the executives aren't used to receiving as many cold calls as they used to.

What about you? Is cold calling still effective in your world? Are you developing other skills around prospecting?

Cold calling is very much alive. But, I am fine with people saying "cold calling is dead" because everyone with that attitude is one less person I have to compete with to get to President's Club because they will never hit. Personal opinion - people who say "cold calling is dead" are cowards that don't want to cold call and are trying to find every excuse they can not to.

Here are a few good threads on the topic:

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
I don't buy that cold calling is dead. There is SO much shit in the market. There really isn't way for customers to sift through everything. Especially in hyper-competitive industries (digital services for example), you better have somebody picking up the damn phone. Should outbounders be working in conjuction with marketing? Absolutely. Should we abandon cold calling? No.ย

cold calling provides much better results when prospecting for me. i talk to engineers in the first instance and many tend not to use LI or respond to emails

I would say *cold calling can be difficult and people often donโ€™t want to put in the hard work*โ€ฆ but itโ€™s not dead. On days I donโ€™t feel like cold calling, I use the excuse that itโ€™s dead, then remind myself I have a quota to hit and I want to go to club.

haha, good point. Cold calling is "dead" until' I need to hit my goals, at which point it becomes very alive again :)

My job is to cold call. If it were dead, I wouldn't be employed rn. I've noticed a difference in the AEs I work with who have sold and cold called in the past vs who don't. I prefer to working with the former.ย

I still book a lot of meetings by cold calling. I will find an other way when the time comes.ย

Great to hear - I'm not giving up on it either. I'd probably give it another 10 years before it's either (a) illegal or (b) tech won't allow cold calling.

linkedin make it easy to establish a connection outside of/ prior to the awkward cold call. But not sure it will ever fully replace.
