CSO, CRO and CCO

what are the differences in a B2B startup context? and what of those makes more sense for a C-level who is in charge of both acquisition (mktg + sales) and retention (upselling opportunities)?

CSO = Chief Sales Officer
CRO = Chief Revenue Officer
CCO = Chief Commercial Officer

CSO, above a VP of Sales

CRO, above a vp of revenue

Sometimes the CRO is directly responsible for the VP mark/VP Sales, they both report to this person. they make sure the 'revenue machine' Ie. from marketing up to sales is running smoothly and they dont hate each other too much.

CCO in my eyes is the person responsible for taking the business from Small/medium/large to the bigger accounts/expanding the strategy

Theres also google.

CSO:   the senior corporate executive responsible for leading and managing the sales function inside a company.

CRO:  A chief revenue officer is a corporate officer responsible for all revenue generation processes in an organization. In this role, a CRO is accountable for driving better integration and alignment between all revenue-related functions, including marketing, sales, customer support, pricing, and revenue management

CCO:  The chief commercial officer (CCO) (sometime referred to as the chief business officer) is an executive-level role, with the holder being responsible for the commercial strategy and the development of an organization.

Well done, kid.

I’d also prefer to be a CRO. You have oversight on sales, CS/AM, marketing, Partnerships, channel, etc. It is an all encompassing role that, for the right person, is more rewarding than a CEO role. Without you the best products become dust on a shelf.

@SADNESSLieutenant best answer so far. Particularly where you elaborated on CRO - IMHO it’s the most rewarding one

exactly. for me I'd prefer the CRO position because it seems more rewarding. as in being able to swing my 'success cock' around with statements along the lines of 'i helped to 5x the revenue of the company in x years or months by expanding the marketing strategy/structure/automation and alligning it with the sales process and structures/pitches and cycles as to shorten deal cycles by x months, increase average deal size by x, & inbound requests by x% yoy, as well as inbound req. to close rate by x%'

At the end of the day they are all essentially responsible for the same thing: making a BUNCH of money, curb stomping AEs with outdated strategies that worked when "I carried a bag", and putting budget in the wrong places

Yes and no.
Yes for big companies - no for young ones > C-level in young companies most of time wear multiple hats

Each company defines these times differently. It’s like asking 10 people what does “marketing” mean… you’ll get 10 different definitions.
