Do you still prospect when you're busy?

Every sales expert/leader I know talks about the importance of continually prospecting. They all say that no matter what you should always add new leads to your funnel every day.

Meanwhile, I am fortunate to receive enough inbound leads at my job that I stay busy all day long working the pipeline that's been given to me, so there are plenty of days I do zero prospecting.

It seems counterproductive to neglect my existing opportunities so I can take an hour to send cold emails and make cold calls. I also believe in work life balance. I'm not going to tack on a 10th or 11th hour to my workday because I didn't do my prospecting yet.

I understand that "always be prospecting" sounds nice in theory but is it realistic? Am I missing something?' I'm curious to hear your anonymous takes.

I prospect every day for the same reason I buy groceries even though Iโ€™m not hungry. You donโ€™t want to be left starving when the food runs out.

My rule is at least one account a day, regardless of how busy I am.

I always try to prospect but if I am super busy itโ€™s one of those, โ€œI will make up the dials tomorrowโ€ or do a half-ass job prospecting like mass emails.

Are you making your number quarter over quarter? If so you might be in a lucky position that you get enough inbound leads. Most sales people are not in that position and will have to do prospecting on a regular basis.

Some measure of it should be done on the regular.

If you're that busy, then fitting in just a little bit a day and/or every other day (if you're up to your eyeballs) will work.

Definitely pay attention to work/life balance, but don't take those inbounds for granted either.

automate your prospecting efforts with tools like outreach or hubspot. then no matter how busy you are, you always have some cold emails going out and tasks being generated so that on less busy days you have logical next steps for that prospecting.

You just had an awesome proposal call, but everyone is going back to their busy lives. What do you do to keep that momentum alive, especially over a long sales-cycle?

What do you say to prospects who say they are interested but busy right now?
