Do you text a prospects?

This may very well across industries and market segments (SMB vs Enterprise) but do you text prospects during the sales process?

The reason I ask is my sales leader has been asking us me to text a prospect for status updates on where they are at with an agreement (context: they haven't been responsive last week when the last meeting they agreed to move forward).. I personally feel like that's an overstep given the prospect is usually very responsive to emails and meetings have been conducted via zoom & teams versus adhoc calls. 

The prospect is a global tech manufacturing firm and the deal is rather complex. In my personal opinion, I would only feel comfortable texting if permission was given. If a seller was texting me, I'd be put off unless we discussed this.

I do not text or contact their cell phones unless I've been given permission. I build the trust/relationship first.

I always ask "whats the best way to get in touch with you?" and ask for the mobile. If they provide it I'll usually shoot a quick text and say "Hi it's @braintank , hope you don't mind the text!"

Always ask for permission. Some execs in my org are encouraging us to do cold outreach via ms Teams (when other orgs allow for it). Mixed feelings on that one as well.

Usually if I have permission I will. If I don't have permission it's also probably a sign I don't have the best relationship with my prospect at that stage.
