Do you use small talk on your Friday calls?

Any of that "Got any fun plans for the weekend?" or chit chat? Or do you build rapport in the other ways?

I usually start off the small talk by asking weird questions. "So Bill, thanks for joining. How's your wife? Impending divorce coming?"
Clients absolutely love it.

Loll that's hilarious, idk if I'd go  that far on a straight up cold call though.

Well of course. This strategy is better for planned meetings. I wouldn't try to make small talk on a cold call.

I think you should start out rather by asking them to list their sexual history. Stronger lead in.

Generally, I don't but I'm trying REAL hard.

Covering Canada, the first 5-10 min of the call is almost always small talk, asking about family, etc... Personally, I want to get on the call, scope the project out and figure out next steps so we can be done early. I'm adapting though!

So Canada happens to be where a good third of my calls go. I actually had some good banter with a CEO in Vancouver the other day.

Dude still hasn't accepted my Demo invite, but nbd I'll just send him some poutine as a parting gift along with some Timmy's ey. I try to read the room, Canadians are somewhere between "fuck you" and "hey, how you doing buddy?". Trying to learn to be on the latter.

haha funny that ya'll mention Canada. Definitely think there is a difference between Canada and the US. I do more small talk with the Canadians where I find Americans just want to get to business.

I agree. I think Canadians are cool. I was calling a bunch of people on Canada day and thinking to myself "wtf are these Canadians doing not picking up the damn phone". Till I saw a Google post about Canada day and that day I learned Canadians have a day for Canada. The more you know.

Show some personality. If the guy on the other end is all business, mimic it but always lighten the mood. People like humans.

I think small talk makes everything go more smoothly. It gets awkward when it’s all business, we are all human beings after all. If it was always strictly numbers robots could easily take our place and save companies lots of $$ 😂

Always build rapport. Especially Midwestern/Southern customers I have found usually appreciate it. Then when you ask for a close you are more of a friend asking than just their salesman

Absolutely take some time to unwind. Go for a hike, watch TV, cook something. Relax!

Team stand ups normally last max 20 min, with WFH would you rather have your teams camera on or off? What has worked for you to get maximum value from your teams and set the tone for the day?
