Does it matter where you get your MBA?

It doesn't seem like employers care where you got your MBA, unless it's some Ivy League school. Does an MBA from Liberty University carry the same amount of weight as a state school?

I'd argue unless you're getting an MBA from a top 20 school it's probably not worth it

I’d argue there’s no such thing as a top 20 school and they’re all worthless.

I don't think it matters. Not in sales.

It matters if you're doing it to network, otherwise much less so.

Ivy does have some cachet though, no doubt

One of our sales VP told us that he doesn't care where you got your degree from, for him the fact that you have one shows that you are coachable and willing to do the extra work. That's all that matters for him

Are you looking to get into leadership? If not, I wouldn’t waste my time and money on a MBA. Just do the life school of hard knocks 😀

I'm currently in leadership and looking to get higher up and also boost my resume a bit. Some leaders say it's extremely important and others could care less and say sales success trumps any school

We've had many threads about whether an MBA even matters - consistently the answer has been no, it doesn't matter for sales. And how could it, when a BA/BS doesn't even matter sometimes?

Now, that said, MBA from Phoenix U will carry a LOT less weight than one from a legit but lesser-known U.

Unless you "just need the piece of paper", yes it does. Some jobs, like in the military, just ask if you have an advanced degree and they have a box you check. That's it.

In the real world though you aren't buying an education, you're buying entrance to an alumni network. Top 50 matters. So it doesn't need to be Ivy League, but it does need to be top 50 for most people to take it seriously.

Yes, it is all about name and network. Saying where you went will influence others, or build rapport. The network you get there will open doors.

The only thing that matters for an MBA is where you get it. MBAs are only worth the networks they create - otherwise don't get one.

@GeneralCorpmentioned this once after he finished at Stanford. Saw the value in the ivy for networking - anywhere else is just paper. Something along those lines.

It depends on your industry and where you want your career to go. A top 20 school could help with your goals.

The way I see it is that no matter where you end up, every school gives you the same three letters after your name.

Some companies give it value, some don't. I have my MS from a second tier university and not once was it given any importance, only my sales accomplishments are asked about.

You’ll have a 100X greater return by starting your own company for 5 years and getting real experience.

College is insanely overpriced, and doesn’t make you different then anybody else in the market place.

But I’m bias. I’m the youngest dude on my sales team, and the only one without a degree, and I close twice as many deals as second place

Is starting your own business the only option for a laid-off salesperson after you reach the milestone age of 50 ? How does one get hired at 50+ without compromising pay, dignity, location and happiness ?
