Enterprise SaaS: Top/Down approach with Board of Directors

We always talk about starting with a top-down approach at the c-suite and VP levels which is obvious. But curious, has anyone ever had repeatable success starting at the Board of Directors with the intention of getting referrals into c-suite/vp levels?

The only time Board of Directors have got involved were deals with non-profits where anything over x amount needed their approval. I have never prospected to them

i think starting at the very top, even starting with C suite can be over rated. Everyone says thats the best thing to do because they make the decisions.

But (at least in my industry) every decision is made by committee and the committee ALWAYS has directors and VPs. getting to THOSE ppl and understanding what is happening before going to C level or above makes WAAAAY more sense to me.

for context my product i sell is directly connected to the revenue of my prospects and average contracts are between $250,000 - $750,000

Nope though I do ask if the board needs to be involved during every discovery even and especially if theyโ€™ve already told me no.
